How should the United States handle what is going with Iran and Israel?
The United States never should have pulled out of the nuclear deal during Trump's first term. That was a real deal, negotiated by and agreed upon with not only the major Western nations but also Russia and China. It wasn't perfect, but there was never going to be a perfect deal. Pulling out of that deal in 2018 opened the path to where the world is right now. After that, why should Iran (or any other country) believe any negotiating tactic that the United States has attempted ever since?
I think the mixed signals from the White House and the State Department since Israel's attack last week demonstrates that the United States gave Israel the green light to attack. It's not a coincidence that Trump set the negotiating clock at 60 days and Israel attacked on Day 61. And over the past 24 hours, it seems like President Trump is almost regretting the fact that the United States didn't openly participate in the initial Israeli attacks and is anxious to jump in the fight. He's got FOMO for a war that even large sections of his sycophantic cult of a political party wants nothing to do with. And, despite the fact that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that we had nothing to do with Israel's attack on Iran, today Trump is talking about the things happening in Iran by saying things like "we" have control of Iranian airspace and "We are not going to take him out (kill!)" the Supreme Leader "at least for now". So it sounds like we very much had something to do with the attack, or will be a big part of it from this point forward. Trump seems anxious to take ownership of this war.
How the United States should handle everything is vastly different from how this United States that we now live in WILL handle things, and it's impossible to predict what this President and this Administration is ever going to do. But I think it's heading in a very dangerous direction for our country and the world. I think Trump's going to use the bunker busters to try to finish off the deep underground bases that Israel doesn't have the capabilities to strike. And I'm starting to think Trump is going to give Netanyahu the green light to kill Ayatollah Khamenei. If that happens, we're in another Middle East war and Iran is not a pushover. Israel has been learning that over the past few days. And if there's one thing that we should all know very well after the first quarter of this century it is that the United States is fucking terrible at regime change.
