Hello, I see that You use gimp too. Are Tou drawing with tablet? Maybe You got a movie of how You draw? I would certainly use something like that from You
OMGOSH IS IT TIME??? IS IT FINALLY TIME FOR PINA’S FIRST ART TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!
LET’S DO THISSSS ✧・゚:*✧・゚:* \(⊙‿⊙✿)/ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Ok so I do not actually have a drawing tablet, what I use is this old cranky touchscreen laptop. It works with a little pen/stylus but it doesn’t have pressure sensitivity or any of that good stuff you want for drawing, but it works.
The reason i prefer gimp over sai is because with gimp i can still get dynamic lines even without pressure sensitivity. with sai that’s impossible unless you have a drawing tablet.
So without further ado…….
firstly, I draw out whatever it is i want on paper. I am way better with paper and pen than digital but digital just looks…cleaner?
Once i’ve drawn whatever it is on my paper, i take a picture with my phone. and then upload it to tumblr as a draft. Then I get on my desktop, save the image i just uploaded, and open it with gimp. Once I make some plain transparent layers for sketching I transfer the file to a tumbdrive and transfer it to that old touchscreen laptop i mentioned earlier. then, the fun begins!
So when I first start it looks like this. my basic pencil drawing. *cover ur eyes kids*
Note that I have 2 layer groups. One is for outlines, the other is for color. I usually make multiple outline layers so I can focus on problem areas like faces or hands/feet and scribble and erase as I please, without messing up the rest of the outline.
Now to sketch, i just trace over my drawing. I tend to use short, quick strokes, but that’s just my personal preference.
This is the brush I use to sketch with. I usually use a size 10 brush with a canvas at least 1,000 px or bigger. I use the pen generic setting since it makes thicker lines when you move then pen slowly, and thin lines when you move it fast, so i can kindof get the illusion of a dynamic line without having pressure sensitivity.
once i’ve got the outline all done, I make the original sketch invisible.
Next I convert the image to grayscale mode
then I fill the background layer with a dark color, and color in the subject with a lighter color, like so
To color the solid layers I use this brush, with the pencil shader setting and adjust the size as necessary
Now I shade. I begin by picking maybe 2 lighter shades and 2 darker shades, and just figure out which areas are lightest and which are darkest
You can also do this with a color pallet in RGB mode.
Next, I take the brush and set the opacity really low, somwhere around 10-30% depending on the colors, and just soften the edges and fill in the where the light and shadows go. Sometimes I will use the hardness 100 brush, but other times I will use the bristles 02 if I want a more brushy look
Once Im content with the shading I set the image mode back to RGB and being filling some layers with solid colors and gradients and experiment with the opacity, overlay/soft light/ etc. I don’t have a set way of doing this part, I just mess around with the colors/contrast/etc until I like it looks good.
I might go back and fix up any stray lines or area that look weird. add the watermark and TADA!!! ✧・゚:*✧・゚:* \(⊙‿⊙✿)/ *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
