As I was listening to YouTube music and nodding off last night, there was an ad for an AI "art" platform and the narrator said "not everyone has the skills to be an artist, but with AI you can create art and sell it."
NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SKILLS-
THIS IS THE BIGGEST LIE OF THE 21ST CENTURY
OK....THIS is why so many young people are turning to gen AI now, because they think their art sucks and people tell them "well not everybody has the skills to be an artist sweetie, now just type your prompt into this machine and it will generate a sloppy image that's still better than what you can ever draw, by the way it's been trained off existing artists' work."
EVERYBODY has the potential to be an artist. Some people have it naturally. Some don't and really have to work at it. But anybody, ANYBODY can be an artist if they just pick up the pen and TRY. Take it from someone who has been drawing for years, isn't GREAT at it, but still takes pride in her work because hey, it was something I MADE.
Remember the quote from Ratatouille? "Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere."
We need to stop discouraging people from trying art or trying to get better at it. I think most people who use gen AI to write or make art do it because they feel like they're so bad at it that they need a machine to do it for them, because the machine is supposedly flawless and smarter than they are.
ANYWAY. Yeah. That ad made me sooooooooooo mad. Because by their logic, people like me should just give up and use the plagiarism machine.
