"Let me know if you find an end."
it ends (2025) dir. alexander ullom
My take on "It Ends" 2025 Movie.
I thought it was about how after graduation most young people feel like they are stuck in a loop in the form of a 9 to 5 job where they barely get any time for themselves, where they can't have fun, do their hobbies or even take proper care of their physical health and work out, a life where they can't explore and enjoy their surroundings, where even taking a 2 minute break feels like they are being unproductive and they are chased right back into work.
They have to try their best to create and squeeze in free time for the things that bring them joy in life and it just doesn't work out for them. Just like Fisher says "I think we shouldn't have a music time, I want to be able to listen to music whenever I want" they give themselves pauses to scream their lungs out and dance, have fun and try to enjoy the ride that is this newfound way of life, the two younger ones Fisher and Day, don't give up with ease and give it a try, to see if it is worth the struggles, if it is worth continuing.
They all even forget to eat, enjoy a little snack on the side and can't even sleep because they have to keep going.
Here is how I think each character handled this way of life:
James: he had a vision, a life and path already set in stone for him by all those who came before, the gurus, the influencers, the rich, he knew that he had to grind, work day and night, start a family, get more money and just keep going and grinding, despite clearly knowing it won't bring him any joy, he doesn't question the system and believes that it all has a purpose, the long work hours give experience, which lead to possible raises and it all makes one grow as a person. But he forgets to enjoy life along the way, he gets an apartment but doesn't even decorate it to his liking, he gets a family but probably forgets to cherish and love them, he is on this journey with his friends but never joins them to have any sort of fun and feel included in their lives, he thinks none of this is necessary and if it isn't being productive, grinding and working then it is simply a waste of time.
A note here, the people who chased their car to me represent the fear of homelessness in the main characters, of seeing these desperate people left outdoors, lashing out at them, as if they are desperate to fill in the job vacancies the main cast would leave if they quit, the cast don't want to be stuck outdoors with nowhere to go so they literally see their car as the sole provider of a roof over their heads and a purpose/means to keep going in life. Which is why when they attacked the group they couldn't hurt James, because he didn't have this anxiety and was sure of where he'd be and that this way of life provides him with stability.
Tyler: he creates his own rules and refuses to do something he doesn't like, for example driving for 3 hours with his girlfriend only to attend an event he doesn't even care for, so he breaks up with her literally because he doesn't bother to change himself and do something he despises just to please someone else, unlike James who would absolutely endure years of torture if it meant he was doing what society deemed right. He hates the limitations this sort of life style brings, his inability to take care of himself and being stuck in an endless cycle where it gets him absolute nowhere, so he quits it and decides to do his own thing. Doesn't wait to turn 18 to do drugs, just breaks the rules and create a fake ID, he goes to receive his punishment on his own terms by showing up to school the next day instead of letting his teachers and the police handle it right at the store when he got caught. He is a rebel but he also knows himself, is sure in his skin and knows what is good for him.
Day: Day my beloved, I just thought her character was the most difficult to wrap my head around? She was emotionally intelligent, self aware, mature, depressed but also never attempted suicide again without ever explaining what changed? I don't know if the presence of her friends kept her going in life. James had her believe that she was growing, that this will get better, that all this suffering isn't for nothing despite her clearly just getting more and more depressed as time went on, to a point where nothing she did could bring her any joy, so she quit, her friendships no longer being enough to keep her going down this path. Quitting here is choosing and making a life for yourself where you follow the dreams you have and make your life worth living in any way possible. Which she and Fisher tried to do in their current situation, by creating music time, dance time, one where they'd scream their lungs out or share stories and that was so beautiful to see, they decorated that miserable little space they had and tried their best to make it tolerable but it wasn't enough nor worth it.
Fisher: looks and acts like the youngest, he has the most youthful and untainted spirit of them all, he is more imaginative, adventurous in nature and is the one the most badly hurt during the attack by the strangers in the woods, because he simply is the most anxious and lost of them all in the group, he doesn't like this new life he finds himself in, he doesn't want to work this hard, lose all the joy in his life and just be on constant edge, he is in denial, gets panic attacks and Is the most hurt because he'd been living in an idealised sort of life, where all he used to worry about were grades and how many eagles can a single man kill on his own, I bet the last thing he expected was finding himself jobless, lost and scared of being on his own right after a degree is shoved in his palm and is now scared that this wasn't exactly the life he was promised or had imagined for himself. He resists and tries to man it up and go with the flow but like Day, he quits too.
In the end I think the message was, whatever path you choose for yourself just please remember to enjoy the journey till you get there, because you only live once and when you are grey and old you'd want to remember the good times you've spent with your friends and family, the trips you've taken, all the good food you've had, the hobbies, movies and songs you've enjoyed and to feel that warmth in your core that you have loved and been loved in return.
I know this is a little on the nose but I'm tired and I couldn't find the right words to explain my thoughts better but I tried, I'd love to discuss this with anyone who is interested! It was a good movie, I really liked it.
Thanks for reading so far! Have a wonderful day! Go and smell the rain or get yourself a warm mug of coffee, you don't have to earn your rest and enjoyment of life, you've always deserved it💖
Best movies watched in 2025
And finally, the top 10 movies I've watched this year. As usual, I will be selecting from all the films I've seen throughout the past twelve months, whether they were released in 2025 or not. This time I won't be going into the details of why I chose them, cause I'm too busy with life, but I did notice that like half of them are horror-adjacent or outright horror films. Take that as you will. Anyway, here we go:
It Ends / 2025 — IMDb, TMDb
My 10 favorite movies of 2025. Honorable mentions: Frankenstein, Ne Zha 2, Brush of the God, Predator: Badlands, and Queens of Drama.
