Welcome to Wonderland - Chapter One Preview
The Villains’ World
Everything was muffled. And it felt like she was falling. Her head was spinning, and her limbs felt like lead. The world was becoming a steady stream of fog, clouds filling her head until there was barely anything there at all. It was dark, and the space was small when amber eyes fluttered open. There was the sound of wood scraping against wood.
Whatever spell was on her had not fully adhered to her mind. The sound of the attempted scraping pulled her out of the lull she was trapped in. What was that noise? It couldn’t be morning already. …could it?
And then suddenly, she was snapped out of her trace by the sudden burst of fire that threw the door of the box she was in off. She squealed, stepping back against the back of the box. Though it was hard to see through the dark brown fringe falling into her face, the room that her little box was in had a floating mirror in the center. And surrounding it were… coffins. Floating coffins.
“Now to grab the goods…” said a childish voice. She looked down. Whatever was responsible for the flames screamed upon spotting her. A small, gray whatever with flaming ears and a pitchfork for a tail. “Why’re you up?!”
“A-A…” she stammered, having difficulty finding her words as her mind caught up with her body. “A talking raccoon?!” No, wait, or was it a cat? It didn’t look normal!
“Just who are you calling a raccoon?!” hissed the raccoon-cat. “I am the Great Grim, soccer extraordinaire!” Sorcerer… what? Her head began to pound as she tried to make sense of it. Her breath hitched in her throat as she struggled to keep it steady. Panic. She was panicking. “Tch. Whatever. You! Human! Just gimme your uniform ‘cause if you don’t—” Flames flared up around the raccoon-cat, making her squeal. “I’ll roast ya!”
In her addled state, she did the first thing that came to mind. She kicked the raccoon as soon as it came closer, punting him across the hall and into the mirror. Before the thing had even a chance to react, she was already running. She ran out of her box — coffin — and out the closest door she could find.
And she kept running. She stumbled, blindly not looking where she was going and getting caught on the ornate black robes she was wearing. She racked her brain, trying to remember when and why she was wearing them in the first place.
Eventually, she ducked inside a random door, leading to a large library that was full of rows and rows of bookshelves. Her fatigue caught up to her as adrenaline started to fade. She was out of breath, and she had to be far enough away from that thing and those coffins to be safe, right? She leaned up against one of the bookshelves, pressing the palms of her hands to the side of her head, doing her best to dull the pain that she was feeling.
She sank to the ground, burying her face in her knees. If this was a dream, then she was ready to wake up. The air around her cooled, and a shiver ran down her spine.
“E… Emery…?” She looked up at the sound of a woman’s voice calling her name. Her vision suddenly filled with another whoosh of flame. Emery flinched, and before she knew it, that raccoon-cat was in front of her again.
The cat cackled as Emery pushed herself as far back as she could, the bookcase blocking a way of escape. “Foolish human! Did you really think you could get away from me? If you don’t wanna get roasted, you better hand over that—” Crack. Emery flinched, holding back a small ‘eep’ as a whip struck the creature’s back. The thing yelped and the flames instantly died down. “That hurt!”
“Consider it tough love.” Emery brushed her fringe out of her face. Standing behind the raccoon-cat was a man whose face was concealed by a bird-shaped mask. The only part of his face that Emery could make out were his glowing golden eyes. He wore a suit with a featured coat draped over his shoulders. The whip in his hand wrapped around the raccoon-cat and with a sharp yank, it brought him right to the masked man’s feet. The angry look on his face eased somewhat when he spotted Emery. “Ah, I’ve found you. Splendid. I trust you’re one of the new students?”
“I-I…” Emery had trouble finding her words. Student? The man in front of her frowned.
“This won’t do,” he said. “You mustn't leave the Gate on your own!” Emery blinked. Gate…? “Not only that, but bringing an untamed familiar with you? That is a clear violation of the school rules.” Familiar?
“As if I’d serve some lowly human!” said the raccoon-cat as it squirmed in the whip’s hold, doing his best to get loose. “Now lemme go!” The man glared down at him.
“Rebellious familiars always say that. Do be quiet for a bit, won’t you?” With a simple snap of the man’s fingers, the whip wormed its way around the cat’s mouth and effectively gagged him. The man held out his hand, and unsure what else to do, Emery took it. She was pulled up on still-shaking legs. “Of all the students that I’ve dealt with, you’re the first who’s been impatient enough to leave their Gate on their own.
“I’m—” Emery tried to say, an apology right on the tip of her tongue.
“No matter.” Emery shut her mouth. “The entrance ceremony has already begun. Let us return to the Mirror Chamber.” The mirror… what? Emery winced as her head began to throb again, her mind trying to make sense of everything. The man put his gloved, clawed-ringed hand on her back and led her out of the library, dragging the raccoon-cat behind them.
Emery finally found her words again. “U-Um…” she stammered. “What are you talking about? Student… Gate…? I…”

So we've all heard the story about how Robert Louis Stevenson was dreaming the gist of Jekyll and Hyde, and his wife woke him up (because nightmare) and he was all, 'WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO MEEEEE'?
I understand, now.
Like, I felt bad. As a writer myself, I automatically felt bad because that sucks. BUT. That basically did happen to me, because my dog rolled over and dug his pencil feet into my ribs, and that's why my story doesn't have a conclusion.
Anyways, I've banged out a fair bit of a new casefic for Jason because I had a weird dream last night, so you can look at that very soon! And when you do, know that I felt so, so sorry for Mr. Stevenson the entire time I was typing.
hi i finally need to get shit going on this blog, so like for a starter !!
