I will recreate this opening and theme song as closely as I can legally get away with in animation for the show-within-the-show

Last two, whew. Henry Roderick Newman’s Gulf of Spezia & John Singer Sargent’s The Moraine. 

Oh boy. I worked up to big favorites at the end. I thought Newman’s piece would be fairly simple given the uncluttered space and clean arrangement of background, midground, foreground, but it was deceptively tricky: the original has quite a narrow value range, visual variation being achieved instead through his outrageously delicate handling of color. I pushed the contrast up trying to make it legible in black-and-white - but still didn’t make that foreground shadow dark enough.

And I took on The Moraine, frankly, for laughs. This is Sargent at his most dizzyingly masterful, and I am awful at rendering rocks. So... holy shit if it didn’t turn out okay in the end. Too light in a few key areas, but I was really pleased with how systematically I was able to set about dividing up the ground; I don’t think I could have done it at the beginning of this exercise.

Mini master copies #5 & 6: Kevin Hughes (1 hr), William Bruce Ellis Ranken (45 min).

Really messed up the horizon line in the Hughes, huh? And the background should be a bit darker. Soothing piece to work through, though, and its simplicity helped me think further about planning rendering of overlapping shapes. This study was the one that drove home to me how much colder white gouache is than paper. (My process, starting in copy #3, started to be "apply paint transparently until you mess up." Nooot the best.) The Ranken I did almost all in watercolor since it was my third painting in one sitting, and of course the original (a long-time favorite at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) is watercolor. Again, the gouache areas jump out to me, not in a good way.
