Birthdays

I guess I will never understand

Why people start to prepare and plan

Weeks in advance

To mingle with their so-called friends

To eat and party, drink and dance.

Friends that will join you because they "care"

But when you need them during the year,

Most of them won't be there

Am I cynical if I say:

If you only care for me for a single day

Why do you even bother to appear?

I've got better things to do

Than planning a party to entertain you.

So no more yielding to social pressure

Take this as another opportunity to measure

All my flaws and imperfections

And to disregard my objections.

I'll be the black sheep in this family anyway

And honestly i'm sick of caring about what you say.

You've once called it my day

And I will hold you to that

So make sure that you don't forget

That I have an opinion, too:

To that so-called birthday of mine?

What if I am more than fine

With just chilling at home

And drinking a glass of wine

and eating take-out with my best friend?

While having not a single reason to pretend

That would be tragic -- now I’m trying to think of a twist that would make it a good thing.  Maybe someone was trying to poison the king with something that couldn’t be detected until later, but the taster’s allergy showed up right away.
