Sometimes, people ask me things like "oh, what sort of furry are you?" Usually my friends. It's a fun thought experiment.
I wish I was a furry, ya know? "Ah, my traits are [insert thing here], which means I am a [insert other thing here]."
If I were a furry, I'd be a deer! Soft, flighty, prey animal. Wild, but not so wild one couldn't find it in the city. It'd just be a little lost, a little bit bumbling, a little bit silly. I'd have spots, and big round eyes, and antlers. But I'm not a furry.
If I were a feathery, I'd be a Ruby Throated Hummingbird! Quick, almost too quick, wild, a prey animal but not in the way people expect, a fighter. Confident, in a way I wish I could be. Loves sugar. I'd have wings from my back, red hair, a brash and confident demeanor. But I'm not a feathery.
If I were an aquatic furry (scalie? Aquafur?) I'd be a shrimp.
And yeah, it's always because of this. Just one jumbo shrimp. But I'm not aquatic.
But what if I were allowed to be a little bit more fantastical with it? Well, if I were fantastical and aquatic, I'd be a deep sea mermaid! I've always felt the call of the sea. Especially the deep sea. Specifically Bathypelagic or maybe even Abyssopelagic. A little scary, sure, with those spines, and those eyes, and the teeth! But also the bioluminescent freckles and spots across the body, silent communication through light alone, curious and misunderstood.... but I am not a mermaid.
"But you could be! You could be that, if you wanted. The self is constructed. You can be anything you want to be." Maybe. I like these things. It'd be nice if I were these things. It'd be wonderful and beautiful. But they are not me. I wish I were a cis woman. I am not. I am a trans woman. I am a woman, who happens to be trans, and yes I am equating that to mermaids. I am not a mermaid, in the same way that I am not cis. I know that I am not cis. In the same way that I know that I am not a mermaid.
But I also know that I am not human. Oh, I'm something that looks similar. Just slightly.... off. I am a demon. I know that in the same way that I know that I am trans. I didn't construct it. I've felt it since I've known what feelings are. I didn't always have words for it. In the same way that I didn't always know that I was a woman, but always was.
It's a type of therian. Otherkin. But people just kind of laugh when I say it. I can't be serious. "You're too sweet and kind to be a demon!" "You're not a demon, you're too innocent!" "You can't be a demon, that's just dysphoria talking."
Unfortunately, I didn't make the choice to be what I am. In the same way I didn't really choose my "chosen" name; it just sounded "right" in the same way that a name sounds right for cis folk. Halie. It isn't special. It doesn't make me feel good, or bad, or anything except: "That's me. That's my name. Yep. It sure is Halie."
I know that my name is Halie. I tried every other spelling. Not me. I tried other names. Not me. I would've liked to have been an Ashley; it's such a pretty name, flows so well. Unfortunately, it's not me. But Halie is. It is me, in the same way that I am trans, in the same way that I am a demon, in the same way that I like the things that I like, and exist the way that I do. It simply is.
I didn't choose to be trans, or to be Halie, or to be a demon, or to like the idea of being a furry or animal therian, or to have dirty blonde hair. These things just are. And I wish I could choose different, but I can't, because it wouldn't be me. The self is a construction, but there are foundations here that cannot even be cracked.
