Thinking about the time a guy asked me, in earnest, if there was ever a situation in which it was appropriate to tell someone who's upset to "just calm down." And there actually is.

There is one situation in which telling someone who is upset to "just calm down" is the right move and that is if your central goal is to send that person into an incandescent rage.

If that's the outcome you're going for, then yeah. "Just calm down" is absolutely your best bet.

In all other situations I really don't recommend it.
