The Day Sicily Let Me Hold a Goat and Call It Family
I still smell the warm milk.
Leaving Palermo, Chasing Gold
The van hummed south. Palermo’s horns faded into the distance. Olive trees blurred into green ribbons. The Mediterranean winked on our left like it knew a secret.
We were headed to a farmhouse near Baia di Ulisse. I had no idea I’d leave part of my heart in the ricotta.
The Welcome That Felt Like Home
The moment we arrived, the aroma of warm milk filled the kitchen. Cinzia’s husband stood over a steaming pot, stirring slowly as he began turning milk into fresh cheese. Outside, white goats grazed under the sun — and yes, some of us held them. For a few minutes, everyone became a kid again. A bright yellow truck sat parked among wildflowers, and a curious little dog darted between our legs, begging to be part of the action.
We weren’t guests. We were family from the first hug.
Hands in Dough, Hearts on Fire
Cinzia didn’t just teach us to cook. She unlocked Sicily.
We rolled up our sleeves and dove into saffron rice, shaping arancini like tiny golden suns. The oil crackled as we fried them to perfection. Laughter bounced off the walls louder than the sizzle. Then came the pasta — fresh dough beneath our fingers, rolled and shaped under Cinzia’s gentle eye. The farmhouse table was set with wildflowers, rustic charm, and a crystal chandelier overhead. The dogs napped nearby, content in the chaos of joy.
We made pasta. We filled cannoli with ricotta so fresh it sighed. We ate until the sun dipped low, clinking glasses to friendship, to Sicily, to moments that slow time itself.
The Toast That Stopped Time
Sunlight poured through the windows. Plates passed. Glasses clinked. We weren’t tourists anymore.
We were family — Nashville wanderers, Sicilian locals, goats included.
This is why I lead Coco’s Italy tours. Not for the views (though they’re stunning). Not for the food (though it’s divine). But for the connection.
