ACCELERAT - Fernet Branca (Vaporwave)
It’s been an epic ride with MGMT and their ever-changing synthpop and psych rock over the years. From the breakout success of the band’s first album Oracular Spectacular to their more experimental sound in their later albums, the Connecticut duo has never failed to defy expectations and keep us on our toes. And now, they’re about to drop their fourth album Little Dark Age, which I’ve been looking forward to since they revealed the title track last year. It’s obvious Andrew and Ben have opted to meld some of their avant-garde experimentalism with more of their earlier synthpop and new wave sounds in these new songs. Fresh single Me and Michael, which arrives by way of music video, is more of their electro-tinged, 80s hued pop, heavily drizzled with some italo-wave and a French touch that at times evokes M83 (particularly M83′s album Junk). Pre-order Little Dark Age, here, and let’s celebrate its arrival on Friday.
Phoenix’s new album Ti Amo drops in a week, and it’s going to be a whole lot of fun, judging from what we’ve heard off of it so far. The French veterans say that their new ful length is inspired by summer and Italian disco. Goodbye Soleil follows on prior reveals J-Boy and the album’s title track. It’s a sun drenched slice of dreamy electronica and synthpop. Phoenix is really indulging in the French house aspect of their music with their recent releases. Goodbye Soleil quickly reminds me of M83′s recent album Junk and Daft Punk’s lighter, airier fare. Ti Amo will be out June 9th via Glassnote Records.
I can’t get enough of the new Phoenix since it dropped yesterday. It’s literally left me smiling for hours on end. The French rock heroes are more lustrously vibrant than ever on J-Boy, a new wavey, italo disco-y, hyper jubilant, feverish glinting spectacular. It sparkles and twinkles, shimmers and swirls, twirling us around within its whirlpool of dizzying euphoria. J-Boy brings to mind some of M83′s tunes off recent album Junk. As it turns out, the long time, much loved French house purveyors have described their forthcoming album Ti Amo as being related to “summer and Italian discos”, so the M83 Junk comparison isn’t too far off the mark. A summer of effulgent italowave and retro disco sounds more than splendid to me. Ti Amo arrives on June 9th.
If it’s some mean streets I have to walk today, it’s some Pleasure Curses that I’ll want to take with me on that risky traipse. The Portland based indie dance duo would put an assured spring in my step and plenty of swagger in my strut with their glitzy disco meets steamy chillwave piece, Mean Streets. The sexy dashing throwback single is lifted from the pair’s Screens EP, set to be released May 16th via Prince George Records. It doesn’t matter if the streets are nice, mean, or unpredictably insane outside the door. You’ll want to sashay and shimmy your way across the asphalt with your smoothest moves to this succulent tune.
I’m still reeling from the news that just surfaced regarding how Johnny Jewel destroyed tens of thousands of CDs and vinyl after he had a near death experience a couple years ago. Those records were imprinted with that long awaited, highly anticipated new Chromatics album Dear Tommy, whose release date has been long delayed while the band has been apparently re-recording and perfecting the release. Though we’re still waiting for Dear Tommy, we get to enjoy some of Johnny Jewel’s production in HEAVEN’s It’s Not Enough. The song is this Italians Do It Better signed electronic band’s first single, and it comes with a mysterious video whose aesthetic goes perfectly the world’s fresh obsession with Twin Peaks and David Lynch. It’s Not Enough’s droopy darkwave and lavish synthcore is ghostly and foggy, gossamer and wispy... There’s no way this twisted 80′s heart can resist HEAVEN and their first taste from a debut EP.
I’m still stuck on vivacious J-Boy, the first single that Phoenix revealed off of their next album coming out on June 9th. We learned previously that the French band has prepared for us an album inspired by summer and Italian disco, and we’re more than ready for that sweet effusion of shimmery italowave and throwback disco pop. Today, they give us its title track, Ti Amo, revealed via a lyric video that resembles how old fashioned karaoke once looked. It’s a shimmy shaking affair that fits right into the theme of their new full length. Pre-order Ti Amo the album, here.
