"Your truly charming envitation for the evening of next Thursday evening was truly delightful to receive this morning." F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Beautiful and the Damned
Alright.
So maybe he wasn’t here with the best of intentions.
So maybe he was just trying to rub it in Raleigh Becket’s smug pretty face that his sister wanted to spend time with Chuck Hansen, instead of her own brother.
So maybe he was turning on the schmooze and charm, angry at Raleigh and angry at himself. So maybe he was flirting hard, harder than he had with a woman in his entire life — he had no idea he even had it in him, to flirt like this. He’s always been sure of the deceit and the lies and the blackness within himself, tries hard to keep it under wraps —
This isn’t who he is.
This isn’t how he wants Raleigh to think of him, or Jazmine, or … anyone. Really.
Halfway through a sip of whiskey, he puts his glass down and lights a cigarette and looks over at her. She is nothing like Raleigh, and everything like Raleigh, all at once. She’s got the air of gentility and kindness that Raleigh has — Chuck equates it with Beckets, though he’s only met two now — but she has something else. Something wild and fierce, the same sort of spark that he finds in himself. She’s pretty and sweet and she doesn’t deserve to be played with because her brother won’t fuck him.
He blows smoke out his nose and taps ash and leans in. “I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he says.
"For what?" she snorts, drawing patterns in the condensation on the side of her soda. She wouldn’t drink — that was new — but she had produced a pack of cigarettes for him at the beginning of their evening. Reds were hard to find.
"For luring you out here under false pretenses," he says with a quirk of his lips and a shrug of his shoulders.
She rolls her eyes skyward and flicks the water off her fingers at him. “You’re an idiot, Hansen.”
"I am?"
"I don’t have a dick and I know what you like," she says, sticking her tongue out. "And I think we’re both pretty mad at Raleigh right now, okay?"
He regards her, head cocked, for just a moment before he laughs.
"Yeah," he says, holding up his glass. She knocks her soda into his whiskey and they take a sip.
Thus begins the first Becket-Hansen truce.
He doesn't recognize her at first. If he hadn't been tugged out of a machine by a monster and pitched into the Pacific, woken up from a six year coma, taught himself how to walk and eat again--he might have only have glanced in her direction and moved on. Cheesy as it may sound, Yancy feels like he has a better grip on life now. He looks people in the eye when they talk to him, even if he's tired. He sparks conversations with strangers. He enjoys things.
Who would have thought? All he needed was a traumatic brush with death to get his priorities straight.
It's her eyes that stop him, and the way she holds her shoulders that makes him approach her. Once he's up close, he only has to look at her for a second before he knows.

Haunt Me {Gipsy feels responsible for all the Beckets--even the reluctant one.}
When she had first developed her consciousness, one of the first few emotions that Gipsy Danger felt - apart from Yancy and Raleigh Becket's thrill of the fight - was a fierce protectiveness. They were her pilots, her boys. Their memories were hers. Their family was hers. And even as a Jaeger, she was aware that she would die for them if she had to.
It didn't surprise her when those feelings persisted as she turned human, and resurfaced when she met her pilots' baby sister, Jazmine Becket. With her pilots...not around...she supposed it was only natural that those feelings shifted to Jazmine.
It wasn't like she told Jazmine who - what - she was. (It wasn't like Jazmine would believe her if she did.)
But even though Jazmine didn't like it - didn't like her - didn't like the PPDC - didn't like Gipsy Danger - even though Jazmine didn't like any of it, Gipsy stayed as close to her as she could, keeping a careful eye on her.
Which proved useful, she would tell herself, when Jazmine had her hands full and dropped something and couldn't pick it up and Gipsy helped. Or when it was nighttime and Gipsy was the last one in her store and - as much as Jazmine didn't like it - helped her close up the shop and walked her back to her apartment, making sure she wasn't taking the dark alleys alone, not with the boys leering at the two of them the way that they did.
Gipsy didn't know if Jazmine was warming up to her - didn't know if Jazmine ever would warm up to her - but looking out for Jazmine Becket filled a hole inside Gipsy.
So she kept up with it, and kept close to Jazmine like a shadow.
