Underrated Acquisitions You Should Be Watching, Part 2
Los Angeles Clippers: Spencer Hawes One of most obvious holes the Los Angeles Clippers roster had this previous season was frontcourt depth. The Clippers had an elite starting frontcourt duo between an ever-improving Blake Griffin and an imerging defensive monster in DeAndre Jordan, but the problem was that once those 2 guys hit the bench, there was nobody to hold down the fort in their absence.
Enter veteran Spencer Hawes, a rare Center who could drain 3-pointers, a man who was left stranded on a Sixers team who was getting worse each and every season, and then a dysfunctional Cavaliers team, and a man finally getting an oppurtunity to be a part of a legitimate championship-caliber team. Spencer Hawes was solid as a starter on a bad team, but he has the potential to be a KEY piece on an already-great team. He gives coach Doc Rivers a 3rd man to use in his frontcourt rotation, either when extra floor spacing is needed, or just to rest one of Blake or DJ. He also adds a rare dynamic in that he can spread the floor as a Center to draw opposing Centers away from the basket which will give Blake more room is he on the floor at the same time. Note the 3 frontcourt players mentioned so far: Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and now Spencer Hawes. In them the Clippers now have a toolbox of skills that can be used when needed. Blake is an offensive force, DJ is a DPOY award candidate and Spence Hawes is a rare commodity. Need a bucket? Play Blake & Spencer. Need to get a stop? DJ & Blake. Another significant note is that DJ’s FT shooting at the end of games has become less of a problem with Spencer Hawes joining the Clippers and along with the signing of former-Laker Jordan Farmar, the Clippers have solid depth at almost every position. A bench unit of: PG: Jordan Farmar SG: Jamal Crawford SF: Jared Dudley PF: Glen Davis C: Spencer Hawes isn’t too shabby either. Rejoice Clippers fans, you finally have the 3rd big man you needed.

Underrated Acquisitions You Should Be Watching, Part 1:
New Orleans Pelicans: Omer Asik One of the constant trade rumours we heard last season was the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans trade of Omer Asik for Ryan Anderson. This would’ve been a beneficial trade for both sides; Houston would have had the “stretch 4” that they so badly coveted, and New Orleans would have a true rim protecting Center to play next to Anthony Davis. As somebody who wants to see Anthony Davis succeed and dominate the league, I was quite excited when the news that the Pelicans had acquired Omer Asik by trade WITHOUT GIVING UP RYAN ANDERSON, broke. This acquisition gives New Orleans 6 solid players and true flexibility. Of course the Pelicans could start: PG: Jrue Holiday SG: Eric Gordon SF: Tyreke Evans PF: Anthony Davis C: Omer Asik *6th: Ryan Anderson This line up is solid, but the one that could be devasting is: PG: Jrue Holiday SG: Eric Gordon SF: Ryan Anderson PF: Anthony Davis C: Omer Asik *6th: Tyreke Evans This line up hinges on Ryan Anderson’s ability to play the SF (as well as his health), which is not something that seems absolutely inconceivable. This line up would be able to do it ALL plus it has a good balance of offensive players and defensive players around Anthony Davis. The worry here again would be Ryan Anderson’s ability to defend opposing SF’s. I don’t think this is much of a worry, as Anthony Davis is more than capable of taking on that responsibility, ESPECIALLY now that he knows he has Omer Asik protecting the rim. This is why the acquisition of Omer Asik is GREAT, it frees up Anthony Davis to roam away from the basket without giving up anything at the rim. And let me ask you this, which frontcourt duo in the NBA is going to be scoring on Anthony Davis & Omer Asik? The only duo that comes to mind that could hold their own against these two, in a “small-ball” heavy league, is Zach Randolph & Marc Gasol, who although not as long, could probably push around the two somewhat slim duo of Anthony Davis & Omer Asik, but can you come up with a legimate second duo? I don’t think there is one unless Charlotte acquired a beast of a PF to go with Big Al Jefferson and I don’t know about him. All I have to say is GET EXCITED, and say hello to this generation’s “Twin Towers.”
