slow burn reddie fics always have stan as richie's confidante and bev as eddie's, so that they are both talking about how much they love each other but to different people, and that's like fine. but i think it is FAR FAR funnier to root that type of dynamic in book canon rather than fanon. because canonically richie would probably be talking to bill. and canonically eddie would probably be talking to ... bill. can u imagine. richie spends an hour yapping bill's ear off about how in love he is and how eddie could never love him back and so on and so on. 20 minutes later bill gets a knock on the door from eddie who has come to cry about how he thinks he might be gay
i could overanalyze my favorite characters and why i love them for days on end but henry bowers bites me every single time because like. stephen king wrote a story about breaking the cycles of abuse and how looking away from the hurt you see makes you just as bad as the people participating and then he wrote about a kid who was violently abused and sexually assaulted. and everyone in canon knew that it was happening to that kid. but he was like. yeah. that one doesn't make it out. that one doesn't ever get to escape. he's just stuck there. everyone else? oh, they make it out in one way or another. but he's there forever. and i'm so fucking insane about it.
here is a transposed twitter thread i wrote a few months ago about it 2019, queer time, Representation™️, etc
so that i'm not just sending a half-expressed thesis to poor gina and so i can find it later: IT2019 AND QUEER TEMPORALITY (😭😭😭). i have been thinking a lot about that one class i took on restoration era theatre and the time we spent on the idea of Queer Time, Queer Temporalities. it was a lot of shit i didn't understand, but the most applicable and concrete just being the idea that expected time, the body and life moving necessarily forward in time, does not apply to queer people, these milestones held up in the Normal heterosexual world [dating-> marriage->children], even puberty, not following the accepted order. and i Loveeeee that when thinking about it™️, having to come into yourself twice because you lose it [yourself, your growth, your relationships] and have to start over. and the 2019 losers do truly have to start OVER, there is no lesson they learn the first time that they get to carry into their mid-it lives, and even the way they learned to love each other as children is lost to them when they start over at 40 in the chinese restaurant. cagey, traumatized adults who can only reach out with sarcasm and despair.
the part of t. fleischmann's time is the thing a body moves through that's like "And anyway, when wasn’t my desire pubescent? I didn’t know what I wanted until I had it, which was just to feel different."
various stolen bits from elizabeth freeman's time binds: "time whose violence offers up queer possibilities despite itself", "this fantasy of rubbing up against the past", and, forgive me, etc, the introduction opens talking about robert graves' "It's a Queer Time", and i cannot help but think: "He breezily dismisses his own mortal end, preferring to be merely 'not well today,' and remains in 'queer time.'" in association with eddie 2019's final words ie "I fucked your mom." this return to childhood, aging backwards in his final moment with richie etc etc. maybe the closest he gets to the almost ease they had as children, without all that adult baggage and mistrust that held him so stiff and strange in the company of the others.
and anyway as i was saying about it 1990/2019 and queer temporality, i think the juxtaposition of the two Films™️ [is hit with rocks for calling It2019 a film] is also really interesting in that it challenges the expectation that representation moves forward as well. like i do feel necessarily very boo we hate your pussy about the non-argument that the more visible open presence of gay men has hamstrung Straight Homosocial Relations or whatever, tomato tomato etc; it's still interesting to hold it1990 up beside it2019 and see the negative space of social closeness (not just male: bev is also an island) left in it2019, physical and emotional. whereas the 1990 losers find each other and feel joy again, get a few sweet moments of closeness unburdened by It, the 2019 losers can't shake the walls they've built against other people. there is no telling of it2019 where eddie kaspbrak could say, as he does very sincerely in it1990, that he is a virgin, where the rest of them don't take it as an opportunity to invite the audience in for a type of cruel laughter that leaves eddie on the outside of a bubble.
i was reading one post that called eddie the emotional center of it™️, and i was at first like whatttt are you talking about. but then it's like: he is consistently a mirror held up to whatever adaptation, showing the interpreter's hand (even in fic!) and he is also my little guy and i love him. etc. of course, they all live these queer atemporal lives, even mike held in an odd stasis. it™️ is a very queer book, series, films in that way. and we don't even have to talk about the stupid clown.
random nonsensical text posts about a 1986 stephen king novel and its 1990, 2017 and 2019 screen adaptations. call that itposting
Sorry it’s still so insane to me that It Chapter 2 chose to convey Richie being gay by making the clown go “oooooh I know your secret.... your GAY secret!!!!” Or whatever the fuck when literally they had ALL of the eye motifs going on right there. Like the giant tentacled eye being one of Richie’s major fears in the book could’ve SO easily been expanded and altered to be like, a way less stupid representation of the fear of a secret being found out and being known as a kid growing up in a deeply homophobic time and dealing with that still as an adult, ESPECIALLY AS A PUBLIC FIGURE!!!!!! Like literally why didn’t they take what was there and just work with it. A clown being homophobic is not even scary come ON
Listen y'all are so valid but I had to put up with months of good omens content consider the influx of It content penance
As much as I loved many aspects of IT chap 2 it really is an exercise in "considering why and how parts of the source material should actually absolutely be changed"
