ROSE: Dirk, I'm afraid you've gone mad with power.
ULTIMATE DIRK: Of course I've gone mad with power. Have you ever tried to go mad without power? It's boring. No one listens to you.

she doesn’t speak for once. it’s not about having nothing to say, not about the fact that the silence settles over her like a blanket, suffocating rather than comforting. it’s about one thing and one thing only: not provoking him. august is all skin and bones, drawing her dirty knees up to her chest and hugging her arms around them. her hair is stringy where it hangs past her face, dark circles under her eyes, shadows of sleep she hasn’t gotten save for in complete exhaustion in months. her chest hurts, her head hurts, her arms hurt, her face hurts; it’s hard to find a part of her that doesn’t hurt. given that little fact, she probably shouldn’t still be sitting here at all. she probably shouldn’t be.
but she is.
she is because she needs him to look at her again. she needs him to tell her that she isn’t as worthless as she feels, to remind her that she can be taught, she can learn. he never does, of course -- not in so many words -- but sometimes, sometimes he looks at her like he might feel it. it’s enough. it’s just enough to keep her holding on. it will continue to be enough.
