“It wasn’t really mine,” Buck tries to ignore the nausea that comes when he says the words. “I was subletting.”
or, Buck tries to move out of Eddie's house.
- “It wasn’t really mine,” Buck tries to ignore the nausea that comes when he says the words. “I was subletting.”
The woman showing him around looks at him for a second and it almost feels like she can look right through him, that something about him screams, don’t make me do this, I don’t want to do this, I want to stay exactly where I am—was. But a second passes and she says nothing, just motions for him to follow her out of the door.
None of the places he’s looked at have felt right. They were either too small, too big, too light, too dark, too far from the station, too far from… Eddie’s house. It wasn’t Eddie’s house. None of the floorboards squeaked the way they did at South Bedford Street, none of the doorframes had an almost unnoticeable mark from the Hildy coffee maker Eddie tried to move once in anger because, she’s spying on me, Buck, before accidentally missing the door by a foot, and none of the kitchen counters had that specific scratch from trying to cut tomatoes with a very dull knife. And none of them had Eddie and Chris in it.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Not that he had imagined how it should have been, anyway. Just, not like this. Eddie and Chris would move back into Eddie’s house and Buck would find his own place again. That was just the way things would go.
When he had given up his loft so Eddie could be with Chris in El Paso, he had thought… No, he hadn’t been thinking at all. He had just done it because he’s Buck and Eddie’s Eddie, and… it had just happened. In the moment, that was all that made sense. Buck hadn’t even thought twice about doing something that big for Eddie because, well, it’s Eddie. And Buck would do anything for Eddie and Chris—even if it hurt him in the process. You make it all about you. He is trying not to.
And that meant Buck had to move. Because Buck was hopelessly, madly in love with Eddie. Something he should have figured out earlier, something other people apparently had. Maddie (and by extension Chimney), Tommy, probably Ravi, too. Hen, obviously. Maybe even Bobby had known, but that he’d never find out. Hell, he thinks everyone knew but him. And perhaps Eddie. No, definitely not Eddie, because if he knew—if he knew… Eddie would see exactly how pathetic Buck was. Falling for his straight best friend. Eddie would repeat his statement that this doesn’t change a thing between us, but eventually, he would become uncomfortable and push Buck away. So he wasn’t going to tell him.
