So Watney uses a crucifix to hold a flame in order to make water. The crucifix is a symbol of Christianity (Martinez was Catholic specifically but that's not overly important).

In Christianity, there are two baptisms of note. The baptism of water, which is an actual event. You get submerged in water and emerge reborn and all that jazz. And then there's the more metaphorical baptism of fire

So Mark uses fire on a cross to create a baptism (of sorts. "Submerged" in water vapor) of water.

And then, the process of creating water sets up the conditions for the explosion. At that moment, he was "submerged" in fire.
