Ryland clutched the photo tightly in his fist. Yes, he saved stars. Yes he now knew that Earth had been saved, the Petrova Line no more.

He stared up into the grey sky, the wind tearing into his long hair. Somehow he’d let it grow out again. Maybe it was because every time he looked in the mirror he was reminded of his lost.

Of his regrets.

Hey, I uh, I don’t even know where to start. You haven’t been picking up my calls…. Fuck I can’t do this–

Hey, me again. Right so, you’re not going to believe this. Actually, maybe you will. You always thought some nutjob would come steal me for my brain, scoop it out and put in a jar or something. Guess you were right, someone did steal me for my brain. God, are you getting these calls? I know it’s been nearly a year since we spoke, but you’ve been reading the news right? Don’t tell you went awol again and gone off grid, cause that’s not cool man. Not cool at all.

Okay, I think you’ve changed your number or something. But I don’t care the calls are going through so I’m just going to hope that by some crazy happenstance you listen to these someday and you’ll understand.

Do you remember? When we were kids and I used to cut your hair. Do you remember how you’d complain about the clippings scratching your nose and I would tell you to shut up and stay still? Do you remember how afterwards we’d go lie down in the grass and tell stories with the clouds as our puppets. When it all gets too much, I look up the sky and instead of agonising over the sun I look to the clouds instead. I tell myself stories until my heart stops beating in my throat and I can somewhat breathe again.

Do you remember? I remember every damned day and it’s killing me right now. I want to hear you. I want to tell you I’m sorry and that I forgive you. I want to tell you it’s not your fault. It’s never been your fault, Colt. You just like to run and that’s okay.
