Next week was going to be Rafe’s first Christmas without Y/N. The love of his life, bestfriend, and wife. She died early this year from a heart disease. They saw it coming but Rafe will never get over it. Who decided that she should get the terrible disease. To Rafe she was perfect, an angel, she spent her money on the homeless and countless charities expecting nothing in return. She looked past Rafe’s coke addiction at the person he really was, she tore down the wall he’s always had up to protect himself from being hurt. When she was around Rafe didn’t need any drug, she became his addiction.
After she died he put the wall back up, coke and alcohol became the only thing in the world that made him feel better. Sarah and Weezie tried to get him to go to work before he was fired or at least get out of bed. But nothing worked. When Y/N died, part of him died too.
He wasn’t sure how he'd get past Christmas without her. He didn’t even realize I was winter, all the days blurring together at this point. When he got mail from his stepmom, Rose, an invitation to the annual Cameron Christmas dinner he threw it away quickly. Y/N was the only one that made the dreadful dinner less dreadful.
He went back to the spear bedroom in his house he’d been sleeping in, not wanting to sleep in their bed by himself. Right when he closed the door the doorbell rang. He muttered something under his breath about how Sarah should just leave him alone. Opening the front door he wasn’t greeted by his sister. Instead standing out in the cold, well as cold as it got in the Outerbanks, was the lawyer that handled Y/N will.
“Good afternoon Rafe.” He greeted, putting out his hand to be shook. Rafe looked at his hand before looking back at the lawyer, Dean Marshall. He awkwardly pulls his hand back clearing his throat.
“What are you doing here.” The hostility obvious in Rafe’s voice.
“Your late wife left a letter in her will, saying to give it to you the first Christmas after she passes.” He scoffs at late wife, and after she passes. No one outwardly said dead in front of Rafe, most likely scared of what he would do. As Dean holds out the letter Rafe grabs it and slams the door before he could say anything else.
He makes his way to the living room. He knew if Y/N was here he’d be yelled at from not decorating for her favorite holiday. He sits down on the couch holding the envelope in his hand. Tears welled in his eyes looking at the writing that was mistakenly Y/N. He sat there for a while just holding it, the name on the front his full first name. Rafael Cameron. She was the only one allowed to call him that, he loved the sound of her voice as she said it. His eyes traced over the perfectly written letter before he turns it open and carefully oppens it.
“Dear Rafey,
Hi, it’s been a while. It’s probably been hard, and I’m sorry. Hurting you was the last thing I wanted to do. I wish I was alive still, I wish we could decorate for Christmas together. I wish I had enough time to have a real life with you. Like kids, I wish we could have had kids, little mini Y/N and Rafe’s running around. You’ve been taking these past months hard and I could only imagine what you’re doing now that I’m really gone. I swear if you turned back to coke I will come back from the bed just to yell at you. You’ve come so far. It’s probably not what you want to hear but Rafe I am totally fine if you move on and find someone else to make you happy. I want you too. I don’t want you to just be sad all the time, you still deserve happiness even if that can’t be with me. I love you more than life itself. I know what you’re thinking. ‘I would ever fall in love with anyone else I can’t blah blah blah.’ You don’t even have to move on with a person to get a dog, well don’t get one now because well, you’ll see. If you get a dog, name it after me. Thank you. I’m kidding, name it what ever you want, just not something stupid like, Buddy. Anyways, get up and put the decorations up now. I know you haven’t. If you don’t before 12:00 am on Christmas I will haunt you. Maybe I’ll just haunt you for fun anyways. Goodbye Rafe, I love you, till death do us part am I right.
Y/N Cameron”
At this point Rafe couldn’t keep in the tears. All he wanted was for Y/N to come back. He heard the door open but he didn’t do anything, just sat on the couch, the letter now placed on the coffee table and his head in his hands. When someone sat on the couch he looked up. Sarah sat beside him her own letter from Y/N in her hands.
“She's gone.” Rafe cried as Sarah pulled her older brother into a hug.
“I have something to show you.” She said after a few minutes. She got up and Rafe followed her to her car. She opened the passenger side door letting a black and white fluff run out and straight to Rafe.
“What?”
“Y/N called a friend of hers, before she passed, his dog was about to have puppies, she asked if she could have one to give to you. Asking him to come to my house on christmas with that little girl and a letter.”
“She said something about me moving on and getting a dog in her letter. I didn’t think she’d do it for me.” He bent down to put the dog finding a collar around her neck, the name tag reading Y/N Jr. He couldn’t help but laugh because it was such a Y/N thing to do.
“She also told me to help you decorate, so I got a tree.” Rafe looked back at the car noticing a tree he hadn’t before.
When the house was fully decorated, Sarah called a takeout place that was open on Christmas ordering for the two of them. After they ate Sarah headed to the spear bedroom Rafe had been sleeping in to head to bed as she was staging over. Leaving Rafe with two options, either sleeping on the couch or sleeping in their bed.
Rafe made his way to the bedroom looking back at the dog staring right back at him. “Come on Junior.” The dog quickly got up sprinting into the room and on the bed. When Rafe was ready for bed Jr. was already asleep snoring softly. As he sat a sudden gust of wind brushed past him. Y/N sent very clear. But the second Rafe realized it smelt like her it was gone. Maybe she was haunting him after all.
