So far “If The Shoe Fits” is working for me the most out of all the sequels. Almost as good as the original Cinderella Story.
Into The Sea Foam
Chapter 2
Keith crossed and uncrossed his arms, unsure where to put his hands. This was all so... unorthodox.
After all, how are you really supposed to react when this alien you've never seen before is practically bouncing with delight because of a situation caused by your best friend's death?
Kyoku was grinning up at Shiro the Hero, eyes wide and shining. And yeah, Keith understood that Shiro and the rest of the team were practically celebrities at this point. Having the opportunity to join them must have been a dream come true. It sure seemed that way, judging by the way Kyoku's tail swung back and forth. It reminded him of the way his wolf's tail wagged in time with his panting.
"Wow. This-- this is-- I'm honored to be here! And you're-- I mean, you're Shiro! The Shiro!" Kyoku seemed almost enamored with him.
Pidge shifted her weight. "Um... it's... great to have you on the team, Kyoku."
Kyoku smiled graciously. "I still can't believe the blue lion chose me to be his paladin!"
"Her."
Kyoku glanced over, startled. "What?"
Keith ran a hand through his hair. "Her paladin. Blue is a she."
The alien frowned. "Are you sure?"
"L--" Keith had to stop himself. "He always called Blue a her."
Kyoku looked confused. "But when Blue and I bonded, he--"
"Blue is a she," Keith said again.
Kyoku ducked his head, and his entire body turned a shade of pink, his color-changing scales flashing. "Sorry. I just-- I thought--"
Pidge tried to laugh, but it came out mangled. "Maybe Blue is genderfluid?"
Shiro cleared his throat. "Keith? Can I talk to you?"
Keith looked over.
"In private?"
Keith grimaced, but allowed Shiro to lead the way out into the hall.
"Keith..." Shiro pinched the bridge of his nose. "I know you don't like change. But just because Kyoku doesn't do things exactly like--" he hesitated. "It's not a bad thing, okay?"
"But--"
Shiro raised an eyebrow.
"I just... Blue is a girl."
"Blue is a magical robot. We assign them genders, but I don't think they'll be too nonplussed if we don't stick to them."
Keith glared at the ground, and Shiro seemed to realize something.
"Look... Just because he has new ways of doing things doesn't mean he's disrespecting... his memory. Kyoku is a new paladin, and his own person."
There was a silent agreement between them, and they walked back inside.
Keith cleared his throat. "Kyoku, I... shouldn't have been so hostile. I'm sorry."
Kyoku smiled, his body going back to its usual cheery orange. "That's okay! I'm just glad I'm not in trouble."
Keith shook his head. "If I'm going to be a good leader, I need to listen to my teammates."
Something occurred to Keith.
"Why... why did you think Blue was a he in the first place?"
Kyoku tilted his head to the side. "He told me so."
Keith drew a blank. "He... He talked to you?"
"Kind of." Kyoku seemed to notice the other's stares. "Don't your lions?"
Keith found it in himself to shake his head. "Never. It's more vague feelings for me-- an aura."
Kyoku smiled. "Well, Blue's surprisingly chatty."
Keith shrugged. "I guess the lions can do even more than I thought." He offered Kyoku a smile. "Hopefully all of this will give us an edge. I'm glad you're on the team."
