Ooh I have complicated feelings about Dara - I love him as a foil to Ali and I think as a character he works really well as someone who doesn’t question political systems and who follows orders even when he knows they aren’t good orders because not following them would mean having to examine himself and the system he lives in which is in direct contrast to Ali’s journey and it works so well!

I also like him as a first love interest for Nahri because he’s also the kind of guy I would have fallen in love with as a teenager but he’s that shallow infatuation that if you married him you very quickly regret it because it’s based purely on physical attraction and nothing more. So Nahri seeing past that attraction and finding a deeper and more connected bond with someone else is very satisfying for her journey.

However, the way fandom treats him makes me dislike him. The way they hold him up as some kind of romantic ideal who should have “gotten the girl” as some kind of reward for being hot and the way they try to prop him up as more interesting and important than Ali is both annoying and transparent. So it’s definitely a case of Dara in canon interests me as a character but fandom has made me not like him.
