#BOTW: Natasha’s Book of the Week

‘Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe” was written by award winning author Benjamin Alire Saenz and was first published in 2012. This coming of age novel was written for the young adult genre however it is safe to assume that it is enjoyed by all age groups thereafter. ‘Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe’ details the relationship between two fifteen year old boys, beginning with their first encounter at the local swimming pool and ending…well you’ll just have to read it to find out. Whilst there are a lot of running themes throughout the novel, the central matters are relationships, gender and sexuality and Mexican-American identity. Aristotle was described as an outsider, a lone wolf by choice and had no intention of befriending anybody until he met Dante.

Dante was the type of boy who had an answer for every question, whether it was asked aloud or not, he was charismatic and friendly and brought Ari out of the comfort zone he had spent his life absorbed in. While the blossoming friendship was the central motif of the novels endurance, there are other sub-plots that pull the reader further into this fictional world. For example, the reader learned early on that Ari’s brother is in prison, but for what crime we don’t find out until later, however we are made aware of his parent’s reluctance to talk about it. Dante’s character was described as being unable to accept his heritage and claimed on multiple occasions throughout, it was because his skin wasn't as dark as Ari’s.

Opinion:

Oh wow, oh wow, how do I even begin to describe my love for this book to you? Good question. Let me just start by saying that so far, in 2015 I have read a total of 17 books and this one is my favourite. I read the entire thing in a little less than 12 hours and refused to eat or sleep until it was finished. As soon as my brother brought it back from the bookstore, I held it tightly in my hands and didn’t stop until I had learned the secrets of the universe. Let’s cover some more formalities, Saenz carried the novel brilliantly, I didn’t feel as though I was forcing myself to keep reading, which I have felt a few times this year. He avoided a lot of clichés that I honestly thought would happen and as a result, he created this beautiful and exceptional tale of friendship, teenage angst, identity and love. I would highly recommend this novel, and I already have to family and friends, but now I am recommending it to you. You might not feel the same way about this book that I do, and that’s okay (honestly, I won’t attack you if you hate it) but I know that the majority of you will love it. This book might change your life, and it might not. What I do know, however, is that this book must have a place in your ‘to be read’ (TBR) pile, it can be purchased from Amazon at a whopping total of $9.08 for the paperback and $13.29 for the hardback. So buy it already! Buy it! Borrow it! Read it! And fall in love with it the same way I did!
