Being out among people and not being able to hear their thoughts was both comforting and terrifying. Charles was still getting used to it.
It also meant people could sneak up on him more easily, which he was really having a difficult time getting used to.

The frightened Scauldron’s signature attack had melted the fabric of his breeches and annihilated his peg-leg, twisting the metal into an unrecognizable and unusable mess. His flesh had fared even worse, and now looked like it was melting off of his bones. Thank gods he had remembered the rule of two while attempting to tame the beast — if Ruffnut hadn’t been with him, he’d have no hope of making it to anywhere safe.
”I-I’m trying, Ruff,” he choked out; tears and sweat rolled down his face and stung his eyes, though he would never admit to crying.

"Ruff?" Hiccup sighed, shoulders drooping as the weight of what he had to do settled onto them. Oh well, at least he could make it worthwhile for her; with embarrassment flushing his cheeks, he leaned down and kissed her, gently, chastely. And when he pulled back, his lips drew back into an awkward half-frown — at least she tasted reasonable.

Mavis was flying over Berk when she was hit by a dragon, sending her falling fast right tword a blond Viking. Not able to recover quick enough to avoid another collision she slammed right into Ruffnut's face, ending up plastered for a few seconds before she fell off onto the ground below.
