okAY yes i have many thoughts abt adhd max i am vibrating rn

okay so first of all theres the average well known "flappy hands"

but she really likes it when she has sweaters with longer sleeves because then she can just flap them around

leg bounce leg bounce leg bounce

cracking her knuckles. she does this SO often its unreal

she doesnt have many vocal stims but she goes "ba ba ba" or just humming and singing sometimes

also running her hand on the bottom of her skateboard, and/or rolling the wheels

just being on her skateboard and swaying is a huge stim

chewing her shirt lmao

im also gonna say that she also stims by pressing on buttons and other stuff in the arcade. its just Nice To Do

also stims by kicking off of the ground on her skateboard. very nice

well this is gonna turn into adhd max rant get ready

she had adhd combined (like yours truly) and finds it hard to concentrate in class

she totally hyperfixated on video games at some point

and comics probably

and skateboarding too

she is a VERY picky eater. like she could barely eat stuff in california, so when she moves to hawkins it only gets worse

sensory issues my abhorreeed

can't stand too-loud noises (b!lly of course knows this and turns up music in his car so that he can't even hear himself)

that being said she cant STAND the silence and always needs background noise (she and el bond over liking white noise from tv)

SHE LOVES TANGLERS SO MUCH

goes nonverbal sometimes because of the fear that if she says anything itll just make things worse. the party + steve is very concerned at first, then learn to live with it

the party + the teens have a running joke of max being moth because she stares at lights so much. visual stim

she scratches as a(n unhealthy) stim but it gets worse after billy's death

hates it when people shout, usually goes nonverbal if it's directed at her

jumps when she's happy!!

you know how she just wears basic and unlayered clothes? yeah she chooses them on purpose because tight stuff feels Bad

she hates labels with her entire being

she seems like the kind of gal to bite her nails

also adopted dustin's "grrr" as a stim

"hey max- grrr" "...what was that?" "...grrr" "could you teach me how to do that" ".. o k a y ?"

will and max (i hc will as autistic) both have lil stimming sessions! they just notice the other stimming and join in, just leaving them laughing at the end!

lucas is super understanding of her stims

he learnt to recognize when she's understimulated and gives her fidget toys!! and if he doesnt have any then he'll just straight up grab her hand and start rubbing his fingers against the knuckles

i'd like to say:

*SLAPS ROOF OF MAX MAYFIELD* THIS BITCH CAN HOLD SO MUCH RSD

she wasnt doing so good in the first place

thinking stuff like

"maybe if i wasnt born then my parents wouldn't have divorced"

this has so many hurt/comfort possibilities in fic holy fuck-

lucas immediately shuts down her deprecating comments

he wont stand for that shit

he is glaring so badly at anyone who triggers max's rsd

unless it's someone they love (like erica) who doesn't actually know what they did wrong and want to make up for it

once erica activated her rsd by accident

just with a lil lighthearted comment

"ugh i hope you arent as annoying as lukey's little friends on the walkie talkie"

once erica finds out abt what she did she feels SO bad. babey

she does everything she can to make up for it

apologizes properly when they're both brushing the barbie's hair

she finds out max stims by brushing barbie's hair when max has to look after once

so when she can see max is understimulated she'll just toss a barbie and a hairbrush her way

also likes max's echolalia (can you hear that? its the sound of max's euphoria boosting)

erica learns to lower her voice around max

max can't watch anything without subtitles btw

she'll watch it and cause she's smart she'll figure out what's going on

but often has to turn to lucas and go "whats going on???"

SO anyway, in honor of summer prepare yourself from some super cute picnic headcanons (I'm not great at lumax or byler so pls help)

- max sitting between el's legs sitting between mike's legs

- el sitting between max's legs

- mike sitting between el's legs

- mike and will sitting together and el's head in mike's lap and he's absentmindedly playing with her hair

- el making flower crowns for literally everyone

- mike and will sneak off into the trees for some cute private time

- mike and el also sneak off

- el and max also sneak off

- everyone's sneaking off

- el's head in max's lap, while max's head in lucas' lap

- el and max braiding each other's hair, sometimes with flowers

- dustin neatly unpacking food and organizing it according to what type of snack it is (appetizer, dessert, etc.)

- el and max AND WILL wearing matching plaid

- will drawing everyone in their flower crowns (except himself ?)

- lucas and el staring at max's freckles under the sunlight bc pretty

- everyone playing soccer (aka trying to play soccer)

i have one thing to say to this: your MIND.

(i lied. i have more things to say to this. in the form of flarrie with she/they flynn, 1k words).

When Julie's eyes go wide as dinner plates, Flynn immediately sees an opportunity, so obviously, they take it. "What's up, Jules? You look like you've seen a ghost."

It's hilarious. Flynn is hilarious. Julie does not laugh, which is deeply disappointing.

"What?" Flynn asks, irritated that her amazing sense of humour has been neglected in such a shining moment.

"Don't look now," Julie tells her, "but. Uh. Carrie's just over there."

"Oh," says Flynn, and as instructed, does not look. They're a very literal person. And absolutely not making excuses so she doesn't expose herself by checking Carrie out when Julie's standing right there. "Well. She does go to school with us, so... I don't understand what's gotten into you, still."

"Flynn," Julie says, emphatically, and puts her hands on Flynn's shoulders to physically turn her around.

There's Carrie, alright. Gosh, she looks beautiful. She's got her hair in a thick, perfectly neat ponytail that's just begging to be pulled out of shape, and her lips are glittery with the gloss that tastes like strawberries, the same gloss she was wearing last week when Flynn saw her, and.

And she's wearing Flynn's letterman jacket.

"Oh," says Flynn, and is relieved to hear their own voice come out quite level instead of the six-octaves-higher squeak she was expecting.

Flynn's letterman jacket, which she'd misplaced sometime last week, and had been looking for everywhere, but hadn't wanted to text Carrie about to double-check, not since she and Carrie — well.

And now here's Carrie, at school, striding up to Flynn with this flinty sparkle in her eye that absolutely cannot mean anything good, and people are looking twice at her because of course it's obvious that the jacket isn't hers, and —

"Julie," Flynn whispers urgently, any concept of maintaining composure in front of Julie forgotten, "rescue me right freaking now."

"Uh... I don't know if I can?" Julie says, somewhere triangulated between baffled, apologetic and amused, because she is the worst best friend ever, "Good luck, though."

Carrie stops in front of Flynn, and they look at each other for a moment. They both pretend not to notice how quiet the hallway around them has gotten. Carrie tilts her head, pouts just a bit, and Flynn falls right into the trap, can't help looking at her mouth.

"What am I, a lost and found department?" Carrie asks, sweet and cold all at once.

"You certainly look like one," Flynn fires off automatically. Their jacket is too big for Carrie, and it makes her look bizarrely cozy, and disarming, though if Flynn makes eye contact all those effects are lost. It's just how the sleeves are slightly too long and so they make little paws of Carrie's hands, and how it keeps slipping off her left shoulder. "Or a thrift store."

"Are you saying I look tacky?" Carrie looks suitably stung by that, which bolsters Flynn's confidence. Inappropriately, as it turns out, because then Carrie just smiles, and says, "Oh, because this is yours! That's why!"

"Well," says Flynn slowly, sensing she has somehow lost the upper hand even though nothing really happened, "thank you... for bringing it... back?"

"Oh, no," Carrie says, shaking her head and tutting. Her ponytail swings back and forth, and Flynn literally has to restrain themself from leaning over to tug on it. "I've taken a liking to it. Even if it's tacky. Maybe you can earn it back."

"Earn it back?" Flynn splutters. "Carrie, that's literally my jacket—"

"Maybe you should learn to take better care of your things." Carrie shrugs, smiles, perfect princess and absolutely infuriating. "Finders keepers, right? Pretty sure even thrift stores don't give things out for free."

"Carrie—" Flynn starts again, and Carrie cuts her off with,

"Maybe if you catch me after class, and you have something you can offer me, I'll consider giving it back."

There's a challenge, in Carrie's eyes, but a question, too, and Flynn can't answer that question. Not here, at least, and not now.

"Fine," Flynn grits out. "After class."

Carrie's face masks over again and she gives a bright giggle, a little wave (with the little sweater paw, and Flynn's stomach betrays her with a flock of butterflies), and trots away down the hall. Perfect ponytail intact. Wearing Flynn's jacket.

"What," says Julie flatly, "was that all about."

Flynn could tell Julie. They know that they and Julie don't keep secrets.

It's just a tricky thing, explaining to your best friend why her arch-nemesis has your jacket. Especially if you left said jacket at said arch-nemesis's house after making out over the top of your geometry homework last week.

"No idea," Flynn says, and gives Julie their best million-megawatt smile. “She must... just... be so obsessed with me she’s breaking into my locker?”

Julie looks about as convinced as Flynn feels, which makes sense. "Uh huh." Thank god, Julie knows when not to push. "Okay, well, if you want me to accidentally pour paint in her thousand-dollar handbag during art, just say the word."

"You'd do that for me? Julieeee," Flynn coos, and puts her arm around Julie's waist. Julie rolls her eyes, but grins, pleased, and the issue is forgotten.

At least, until after class, anyway. Flynn has a feeling they know what Carrie wants, and it sends a little flutter up her spine to think about it.
