What is mental health? MentalHealth.gov defines mental health as our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental health is equally important as physical health. Why? Because mental illness hinders your growth as a person, hinders your happiness and may lead you to commit suicide. Suicide is the most dangerous complication of untreated mental health problem. According to National Statistics Office, mental illnesses are the third most common morbidities among Filipinos. Furthermore, 17-20 percent of Filipino adults experience psychiatric disorders and 10-15 percent of Filipino children, aged 5 to 10 years old, suffer from mental health problems. These worrisome numbers may simply be a fraction of the actual problem since mental health issues, especially in a Catholic country, tends to be under reported. What can be done to promote mental wellness? Find the right balance. Know your worth, surround yourself with positive people and take care of your body. Exercise, eat a balanced diet, take your vitamins and get enough sleep. Let us erase the stigma attached to mental illness.
