Who were the best US Presidents?
In Ivan Eland’s book "Re-carving Rushmore" he examines each U.S. president according to the level of success they had in advancing the causes of peace, prosperity, and liberty. Basically which US presidents did the best job at doing what they were supposed to do.
Here are the ones Eland rates as the top 5: pictured from top to bottom, Martin Van Buren the 8th president, John Tyler the 10th, Rutherford B. Hayes the 19th, Chester A. Arthur the 21st, and Grover Cleveland the 22nd and 24th. His criteria was based on their accomplishments in maintaining a limited government. None of them got us into senseless wars, none brought on or continued economic depressions or recessions and none of them expanded the power of the central government.
Notice that by these standards we have not had a really good president since the 1890s and if you believe in freedom each one since then since then seems a little worse than the one before. If we had a candidate like one of these 5 old guys it might be worth voting.
