Standing at 249 metres above sea level is Ivinghoe Beacon—an imposing gateway to the rolling hills of the Chilterns offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside in Bedfordshire. Ivinghoe Beacon is one of the stops on the 10-mile Ridgeway Circular Walk that starts from the picturesque village of Aldbury along The Ridgeway National Trail and passes through the National Trust Ashridge Estate. On this trail you can enjoy the contrasts between the two long-distance footpaths: airy ridges on The Ridgeway and the patchwork of woods and fields on the Chiltern Way. The Ridgeway National Trail is in fact described as Britain's oldest road, following a route used for at least 5000 years by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers—so that's reason enough to walk along this windswept landscape in a quiet, rural area of England. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: The safest way to reach the Ivinghoe Beacon directly via public transport is to take a train from London Euston station to Leighton Buzzard with 'West Midlands Trains', or from Clapham Junction with 'Southern'. Then catch the 162 bus to Ivinghoe Aston with the company 'Star Travel' and make your way up to Beacon Road on foot.
