February Drabble Challenge
“Mama, what are you doing?” Lennon’s voice, startles her.
She turns from where she is staring out the kitchen window.
“Looking at the garden. I think it’s looking a little sad these days, don’t you?”
Lennon shrugs, clearly more interested in her chocolate chip pancakes.
“What do you say we plant some new flowers in there for mommy?”
All three of her girls light up at the idea of getting to play in the garden. Chloe might kill her for letting their little heathens loose, but she figures if there’s a chance it will make her wife smile, it’s worth it.
While roaming the aisles of the gardening center, Charlie pulls on Beca’s hand.
“Mama, what’s mommy’s favorite flower? We should plant that.”
Lennon looks through all the seed packets, with her little index finger tapping at her chin. The focus on her face, while she stumbles over reading all of the fancy flower names makes Beca laugh.
They spend the better part of the afternoon in the garden. Maggie digs a big hole off to the side, no one really knows why, but it’s keeping her busy and happy. Charlie helps Beca divvy up the seeds and Lennon carefully plans where they should go; all in all they actually make a pretty good team.
It takes much longer than Beca thought it would for them to begin to bloom but the very moment she notices the first little flower sprouting, she shows the girls. They all run to Chloe, yelling over each other, pulling on her arm. She laughs, not quite sure what is happening, but the excitement on their faces is enough for her to interested.
“Your flowers are growing, mommy, look!” Lennon says, she points at the little sprout, with a beaming smile.
“You planted me flowers?”
Beca can tell she’s fighting back tears.
“Roses.” Charlie says, “Mama said they’re your favorite.”
The girls lose interest quickly and run off to play on the other end of the yard. Chloe pulls Beca into a hug and kisses her temple.
“You’re welcome, we just wanted to make you smile.” Beca says.
“It worked. But maybe this isn’t the best time for me to tell you my favorite flowers are sunflowers.”
Beca looks at her, wide eyed, almost sad.
“I’m just kidding, baby, roses are my favorite.”
“That was mean. Just see if I do anything nice for you ever again.”
