On Sunday, 12th August, we commemorated the International Youth Day 2018. Annually, this day is used to celebrate youths all over the world, especially the amazing young leaders who are committed to building a better; more sustainable world for all. Today on STRAIGHT TALK, we shall be discussing the theme of this year's International Youth Day which is "Safe Spaces for Youth". On the programme, we shall explore the roles that we all must play in creating safe spaces for youths to thrive, live, grow and explore. If you are within Indoors State, please tune in to Radio AAUA 90.3FM and be a part of the programme. If you have any thoughts to share, please use the comment box below. Weekly Roundup August 6 to 12
August 12th celebrates both International Youth Day and World Elephant Day!!!

International Youth Day
This year’s theme centers on providing safe spaces for youth.
“Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision making processes and freely express themselves. While there are many types of spaces, safe spaces ensure the dignity and safety of youth.”

World Elephant Day
Moving Giants
Follow the three-year elephant-translocation project in Southern Africa!
“Moving Giants is the largest elephant "re-wilding" effort ever attempted from South Africa to Mozambique, as 200+ elephants will journey more than 1,000 miles to their new home.”
Don't Let Them Disappear - World Elephant Day
“In partnership with the renowned conservation group, WildlifeDirect, Amarula and Amarula Trust is installing the 2018 "Don't Let Them Disappear" life-sized elephant ice sculpture in Toronto’s Distillery District on World Elephant Day, August 12, wherein the sculpture will gradually melt, symbolizing the alarming rate at which African elephants are being killed for their ivory.”
“WildlifeDirect and Amarula are unveiling #DontLetThemDisappear campaign in cities around the world - Johannesburg, Sao Paolo, Toronto & Nairobi. Help us spread the word by sharing this message.”

COMMUNITY ACTION PLANS: USING LOCAL GENIUS TO AVOID CRISIS
“[Invisible Children] work’s with each community in the Early Warning Radio Network to create what we call ‘Community Action Plans’ by identifying the unique challenges and strengths within each community.”
“The first thing we do is work with local leaders to create a local peace committee. But before all that, we work with the peace committee to get to know their community through a process called community mapping.”
Can Education Really Reduce Armed Group Recruitment?
“A new study has revealed that increasing access to high school education in war zones could help diminish support for armed groups. Research from the global organization Mercy Corps showed that young people in conflict-affected areas of Somalia who have access to secondary education are almost half as likely to support violent groups than those not in school.”
War victims in northern Uganda still waiting for justice and reparation
“The post-conflict situation in this region requires a comprehensive and holistic intervention by all the relevant stakeholders in ensuring sustainable peace, reconciliation, reintegration, rehabilitation and sustainable development.”
