Games and Membranes
(This is my first time putting a story on here so sorry in advance lol)
Dib was still frustrated beyond belief. Everything he had worked for, everything he had been spending his life doing.. all of it was a lie! And not only that… but even after this discovery was made, after everything Dib learned… nothing changed!!! The earth didn't catch on fire, Zim didn't stop his stupid schemes and Membrane just went back to work!!! Dib couldn't believe it! He was Irken!!! That seemed to be, at least to him, an incredibly important piece of knowledge that he hadn't known all his life!! When he had found out it had been a terrible time at the Membrane home… but things were calming down, at least a bit… at least to him they were.
Gaz had left to go see a baby metal concert which had left Dib and Membrane alone for the night. Every since that night Dib hadn't really talked to his father much, it upset him too much to think about it. So he slowly moved from where he was on the coach to go set up portal.
"What are…. Um what are you up to Little Moth?" Membranes voice sounded terrified and quiet.
Ever since that day Membrane had been acting like Dib was a ticking time bomb. Waiting for the chance to exploded. Dib let out a loud breath through his nose.
"Just gonna go play Portal." He said and started to work quicker.
Dib still loved his father but it was hard. To know that this man that raised him wasn't even, well, a man. It just seemed to add on to Dib how little his family trusted him. That thought got hot tears in his eyes and he wasn't able to see as he tried to reattach a cable. He fumbled with it for another infuriating minute before he felt a hand on his shoulder and another gently remove the cable from his hand.
"Its right here Little Moth." Membrane said quietly as he plugged the cable in correctly.
Dib didn't know if it was the warmth he felt from his father pressed on his back, the tone of his father's voice or the 'Little Moth' comment but it all became too much for him.
He flung himself into his father's chest and let himself begin to cry. Membrane seemed to tense but after hesitating for a small second firmly wrapped his arms around Dib and hugged him tightly.
"Why.. didn't you tell me?" Dib managed to say in between his sobs. He heard sniffling and looked up to see Membrane had tears of his own spilling over his goggles.
"I wanted to. For so long… but I was so afraid. You were dead set on giving an Irken for science. I was afraid you'd hate me. I wouldn't risk losing you." Membrane said this all slowly as if finding the right words were difficult for him, or as if he wasn't able to keep his voice from breaking long enough to talk normally.
They stayed there on the floor for the next couple of minutes holding each other. Dib didn't say much but Membrane continually told him how proud he was of Dib. Honestly, Dib needed this, he had for a long time. He missed his father so much Irken or not.
Dib took a small breath and pulled away from his father turning on the game and going to sit on the couch. Membrane awkwardly watched him not knowing what to do. He slowly got himself off the floor and went back to his seat on the couch his cup of tea left untouched and cold. Dib knew his father was still feeling bad, Membrane's hands were still shaking.
"You know." He said softly which immediately caught Membrane's attention. "Portal has a coop mode… if you want to play." He held out a controller to his father and smiled slightly. Membrane took his his eyes not leaving his son's face then slowly moved to look at the game.
"I'm not sure how to play." He remarked looking it over. He immediately fell off the edge of the first platform and Dib couldn't help but laugh. The rest of the day was rather uneventful as the two played Portal for most of it, but it had been one of the best days Dib had ever had.
The little bug Prince
(A little fanfic I wrote for the IZ ARCS BLOGS, containing their @science-man Membrane, @paranormal-eyes Dib, and a little @1nv4d3r-sk00dg3 Skoodge. Based on the idea I had that membrane might have told the kids some parts of his origins creatively via fairy tales in their childhood. And I usually don't write and am dyslectic please be nice)
He sighed, finishing up whatever device he was tinkering with to distract himself, honestly he wasn't sure what it was supposed to do at this point. He puts it aside, cleaning up his tools as his new green small friend handed him his goggles. "Are you sure I should do this?" "Yes...Like you said yourself, he's a smart kid he would find out anyway, better to tell him it like this"
"So you’re not gonna talk me out of it?" he says as he clicks on his disguise goggles, his green skin and deep blue eyes disappearing. Skoodge gave him a weak smile. "Would you want me too?" "...No….. I wouldn’t wish me luck.." "Good luck!" He opened and closed the door to his lab not after giving Specs a small pet, making his way up the stairs, looking at his son’s sticker-covered door. He knocks after staring silently.
"...Hello Son?" …. Silence "Can I please come in little moth... I wanted to kind of talk to you" He hears something being thrown, presumably a pillow, and angry walking to the door as he tries not to cringe seeing his kid open it slowly "Are you finally gonna tell me the truth or stop lying at least?" ..He needs to withhold himself from touching his shoulder and hugging him "I think I wanna make a start... If you let me" ... After a moment of judgemental silence, the door opens and he steps inside. The darkroom is covered from wall to wall with conspiracy theories, cryptids, and alien stickers - he feels Alien, he’s the biggest conspiracy of them all - and sits down on his son’s bed slowly.
"Well!?" ".. Give me a moment.. and bear with me… talking about these things aren't easy for me but that gave me no excuse to treat you like the way I did, aliens… that's kind of scary.. isn't it?" "I.." He sees his son's demeanour shift, his shoulders slumping, so small for dealing with this all alone. "I can handle it" He sighs, petting the bed next to him. "You shouldn't need to. I was foolish enough to want to believe it wasn't real so you could safely go to school again.. Be a normal little boy, but you’re not." Dib sits next to him, saddened. ".. What you mean dad?" "You’re extraordinary.. And brave.." He waits, giving him a chance to respond but hearing him stay silent. "Do you remember that story I used to tell you when you were little?" "What's this about? Snow White and the nuclear reactor?" He chuckles slightly "No not that one" ''Rapunzel an-" "No no! The one with the little bug prince" He manages to look him in the eyes seeing something spark already, his small brilliant son "It’s been a long time since I heard that one… I barely remember it.." "Can I tell it to you again?" He shifts looking at him ".. Alright..''
"A long long time ago in a strange faraway place was a kingdom... The kingdom of Spiders. It wasn't a peaceful one, no, it was known for its ruthlessness and terrifying contraptions and devices and the cruel tyrant who led it. Everyone was raised as a soldier and thought the exact same thing, fight and conquer for glory, or raised to support those who do. In that kingdom was a little bug, that little bug just like everyone there was trained to fight and conquer, to be smart and ruthless, but he did not enjoy it. The little bug didn't want to be ruthless and cruel they didn't want to fight, he wanted to love… but he needed to even survive.
And the little bug was good at it, all of it, training with their furry companion Patch. They went up the ranks, he excelled in fighting strategizing, even spying. The little bug hurt people but he had no choice.
One day the king of spiders passed away, having no heir, so one got chosen by the Oracle, the kings and the kingdom's guide and advisor, having seen the Little bugs growth and potential they got chosen.
The little bug was now a prince and suddenly lived in the castle, having millions under his command, so many resources under his fingertips. The Little bug prince, no longer blindingly following commands but handing them out, got overwhelmed, he couldn't send people to their death? He couldn't have the blood of millions on his hand now he had a choice, he could rebel but the Oracle would have him executed for being defective. So he played his part and put on the crown, growing sadder every day. Until one day he found an opening a way out. He ran away.
The little bug prince, he's happy now, he got his own place, a home and a Family… it's all he ever wanted, no one knows him as the Prince of the spiders, and he hoped no one ever found out to keep safe what he loved, and he was happy.."
