I was tagged by the effervescent @junebugninja to post my last selfie, the last song I listened to and my lockscreen.

The selfie is of me (on the right) with my friends Brenda and @wwjend, who were both here visiting last weekend! It was wonderful to hang out with them both again. 

The Song of the Sea is one of my 5yo’s favorite movies, and she loves the soundtrack too. We were listening to it the other night when I was putting her to bed. 

The lockscreen is a photo I took of my daughters one day last spring when we were in Iwakuni. They’re standing in front of Kintai Bridge, which is a wooden arched bridge first constructed over the Nishiki River almost 350 years ago. It rained on and off that whole day (that perfect kind of rain Japan seems to have which makes everything seem soft and clean and lovely, but doesn’t get you completely cold and wet as long as you have an umbrella), which made it a perfect day for walking around and exploring, actually. We almost had Kikko Park to ourselves!

Hey since you blog a lot about racial problems and seem to know a lot, is it alright if I ask you a question? I am an East Asian in a very white community. Because of this, I have a lot of the speech patterns and cultural attitudes of the white people around me. Because of this, a lot of my white friends say I am "really white" or "more white" than they are, despite the fact that I retain a lot of Asian values and do not have the same racial privileges that they do. Is their behavior racist?

YES. Their behavior is EXTREMELY racist because what they’re doing is they’re disassociating you from your cultural background and placing you in a “white approval” bubble. It’s the same as when white people tell black people they don’t “talk black” or they “act white.” It’s a racist way of saying “Your people are weird, but you’re okay so you can be our friend!” Now your friends may not realize what they’re doing but it is in fact a micro aggression and it is completely unacceptable. 

Your cultural background should never come into question when they try define who you are as a person. You live in an environment that is predominantly white so obviously these white people see you as sort of an anomaly. “She’s asian but she’s so profound, she’s so cultured, she’s whiter than us because she carries herself like a white person.” 

Yeah, tell them in the best way you can to cut that shit out because it makes you uncomfortable and there is no such thing as acting white. Acting civilized is not acting white. You’re acting like yourself which is a reflection of the community you’re in. You don’t act “more white” than them because you’re asian. You act like you.
