I wrote this, what, a year and a half ago? It was the first thing I'd ever really been proud of, and I still think it's pretty cute tbh, but very, very cringy. (izzydoodledump remember this?)
Riley "RoadRunner" Lilithe.
That's what they called her.
3 time national cross country champ, defeated by none.
William "Coyote" Robertson.
That's what they called him.
3 time national stand in, defeated by one.
Riley stood stretching at the school gates, her neck cracking as she rolled it from side to side.
"Well hey there little bird" the smooth voice sent chills down her back, shocking her to the core.
"Asshole, you scared the living crap out of me." She laughed, playfully pushing Will in the chest. He dramatically stumbled back, falling over his own feet in the process and ending up on his hands and knees.
"And this is why you've never beat me." She leant her slender frame against the gate. "Now get off the floor if you wanna be home by sundown." Riley pushed herself off the gate and lined herself up, Will following slowly behind.
"READYSETGO!" She yelled, taking off in front of him before he could line himself up.
"Bitch" he muttered under his breath, a smile creeping across his face.
As they reached the school once more, the sun was dipping pleasantly behind the treetops of their neighbourhood and casting a pinkish-orange glow throughout the sky.
Will couldn't help but notice how cute Riley looked when she was all flushed, and how her eyes went wide as she breathed heavily. God she was adorable.
Wait.
What was he thinking?!
She was the enemy.
She was his competitor,
Nothing but a target.
"Earth to Will, do you read?" Riley sneered breathlessly.
"I never learnt to read." He playfully shouldered her as they walked.
They both walked in a awkward silence,
Will was the first to break it,
An apologetic-ish goodbye.
"See ya at the race tomorrow?" Riley asked, already knowing the answer, just wanting to hear his velvety voice again.
"Of course I will be, Roadrunner."
She lowered her head and turned on her heel. A blush creeping it's way to her cheeks.
"Oh and by the way," will yelled over his shoulder, "yeah?" Riley replied.
"I think you'd look cute with purple hair."
And there was that devilish grin of his, leaving her there gobsmacked.
He just called her cute.
6 tubes of what Riley had thought to be washout purple hair dye and two freak outs later Riley was ready for the race.
Oh how she couldn't wait to see his face when she turned up with her once ashy blonde hair dyed purple.
Strolling over to the bench, trying to hold back fits of giggles as she passed people's shocked faces. Riley looked onwards and took a deep breath.
"Well, well, well. I see you took my advice little bird." The same voice breathed down her neck,
Today, it sent a different sort of shiver down her back, and she couldn't help but enjoy it when he wrapped his arms around her and whispered something incoherently in her ear.
And then she felt quite sad at the loss of his presence.
"RoadRunner" the coach's booming voice broke her out of her trance, her confused look earned small giggles from the rest of the running team.
"Uh, yeah coach?" She asked sheepishly.
"You'll be running Hurdles after cross country." He stated nonchalantly.
"But- but hurdles?! That's Will-iams strong point! Enter him! Not me!"
Her voice cracked and wavered as she fretted.
"Relax little bird, we were offered to enter two qualifying racers and seeing as you've been practicing. Coach thought he'd give you a go." Will smirked. "And maybe Will will finally beat you!" A teammate laughed out loud, and Will punched him playfully, but didn't remove the cocky smirk plastered on his face.
Will and Riley along with other team mates and people from other schools were entered in the cross country race. Seeing as it was the longest, toughest and most prestigious race in the whole league. Riley hadn't lost a qualifier since 5th grade.
"Ill catch you this time RoadRunner!" Smiled a boy from Henderson College. He's never made it higher than 9th place. But he was sweet, so she played along. But before she could speak Will was cutting in. "That's my job." He winked to the kid who obviously caught his drift and turned away. "Ugh, you're such a coyote." Riley sighed heavily at him. "Well today, Coyote's gonna catch the RoadRunner." Will stepped closer, her small frame staring smugly up at his tall one. "Haven't you heard?" Riley stepped forward, closing the space between them. "Coyote never catches the RoadRunner." She hissed. And in that moment, he could've leaned down and kissed her, and she was aching to pull him closer. "Well, we'll see, Little Bird." He turned and walked away, leaving her flustered and shocked.
"Meep, meep, little bitch." A high pitched voice spoke from behind Riley. She jumped, turning to see who the voice was coming from, of course. She should've guessed.
Bunny "bugs" Meyer. Riley rolled her eyes, "Hey Peggy." She said blankly. A fustrated, dying whale like noise erupted from the girl in front of her. "FOR THE LAST TIME RILENA. MY NAME IS NOT 'PEGGY'. I AM BUNNY!" She screamed, heads turned to see the small busty blonde, face red with anger.
"And my name isn't Rilena, so I guess we're at a crossroads." Riley spat before turning to take her position.
As Riley cooled down on the bench she smiled, Will and Bunny's face when the Henderson kid beat them for second place was priceless. He was better, but not good enough to get within 3 feet of Riley.
And as will sat panting, a look of bewilderment on his face. Riley watched as Bunny cried and wailed to her friends.
She took a long sip from her water bottle.
She was not ready for hurdles.
Riley breathed deeply, her eyes watering slightly at the blast of wind as she opened her eyes.
And she waited for the gun shot. She looked at Will, his eyes closed in concentration.
And as she turned her head forward, she heard the countdown.
On your marks, get ready, get set,
BANG.
She sprinted like she never had before, the first leap popping up ahead.
As her feet lifted off of the ground, all fear went flying with the wind.
1 hurdle,
2 hurdles,
3, hurdles.
And all this time, she was only a foot in front of Will, his form ready to step in front and steal first place from her. But she wouldn't let that happen.
And suddenly, there it was, the last hurdle and the home stretch.
And she turned her head as she leaped, looking for Will, her eyes searching.
And then there he was, a hurdle behind her, time was going in slow motion and she smiled as the cool air blew her ha- crack.
Her foot twisted as she landed.
STOP. STOP NOW. Her head was screaming. But she didn't, in agony she ran, down the home stretch and through the finish tape. The crowd cheering as she collapsed, her scream pierced through the cheers and suddenly it was quiet.
"RILEY!!" Will screamed back. Running through the finish line and falling to his knees next to her. People crowded, whispers and gasps surrounded her, she covered her ears trying to block it all out, block out the pain.
"MOVE AWAY!, DIDNT YOU HEAR ME? I SAID FUCKING MOVE!" Will screamed angrily, before scooping her head into his arms like an injured baby dove. "Hey little bird, it's all gonna be okay. The ambulance will be here soon. I'm gonna take care of you until then." His voice was smooth and soft. "This might hurt, but you have to trust me. Do you trust me?" He cooed, fear filled his voice as she remained silent. She nodded slowly,
And with that, he lifted her in his arms, effortlessly carrying her.
At first they wouldn't let Will in the ambulance.
But after a tearful plea from Riley they allowed him.
He held her hand as she drifted to sleep.
Why her? He pondered.
Why? Such a talented, beautiful girl.
Why would the world be so cruel?
And that was the moment.
And his eyes softened, and will forgot all his thoughts, and only one thing crossed his mind.
"Riley" he breathed.
Riley woke in a clean white room.
It was sunny and warm. And she just wanted to snuggle. But the fact that her leg was lifted uncomfortably in a hoist snapped her back into reality.
They doctors explained that she fractured her ankle. It was severe.
She wouldn't run for a while. And she couldn't find the strength to reply. So she just nodded. She nodded and waited, for the pain to seep away, for her aching body to heal. And a woman's voice broke through the eerie silence.
"Ma'am. There's a young man here, he's been waiting for you all night." She nodded again. She couldn't think. She just turned her head back towards the window and continued to wait.
A soft knock at the door, light footsteps.
"Hey little bird." Wills voice cooed. And suddenly she had the strength to speak. And she allowed a smile to creep up her cheeks at the sight of the sleepy, disheveled boy before her.
"Hi." Riley looked deep into his soft eyes, trying to decipher his thoughts.
"I-I didn't know what to do. So I bought you this cheesy card and I drew on it a little bit. And I don't know where I'm going with this." He laughed deeply. His tired voice straining.
Riley sat up and he handed her the card. Standing awkwardly afterwards. "Sit down you idiot. Have a nap. You look like death." She pointed the card at him. He walked over the plush chair and laid down as much as he could. His eyes drooping as he drifted off to sleep.
Riley opened the card.
'Hey Riley.
That's weird isn't it? I'm so used to calling you little bird. The truth is, I tried to get the coach to enter Jill in hurdles. Why? I knew she couldn't beat me. But you, you just alway do. I don't know how or why but it's just you. And I like that.
The way you close your eyes before a race, or the light that pours out of you after one.
Get well soon.
I love you.'
And as promised, underneath there was a drawing of her, a pretty good drawing.
Her crossing the finish line, the tape snapping as she help her hands high in the air, her mouth turned into a proud smile, her eyes closed in victory.
A tear slipped out. She wanted to jump out of the bed and kiss him.
She didn't place the card on her night stand, instead she held it close to her heart as she drifted off to sleep.
For 2 weeks, Will bought her flowers and a card every 2 days.
When she was released from hospital in a wheelchair, with a set of crutches for when she started walking, he dropped off a flower every day, a note and doodle on every one.
A week or two later, Riley had lost count. It was time for the national championships. Will would be the replacement for cross country and hurdles.
This was his dream.
And even though she wasn't racing, she was happier than ever. Because Will was happy, she was happy.
After reassuring her dad that she was fine. She waved goodbye as she hobbled away on her crutches.
The Henderson boy offered help when she stumbled, she let him take her to her teams bench before thanking him.
Small cheers erupted from her team when they saw her. Hugs from the girls and light punches from the boys. And Will just smiled.
Three hours later, she cheered proudly as they announced Will as the national cross country and hurdles champion.
And as everyone started pouring out of the stadium, Riley pushed herself towards Will.
When she reached him, she threw her crutches to the ground and grabbed him, his large hands gripping her protectively.
She stood up as best as she could, and for once, Will took the lead.
Leaning down and kissing her.
Riley melted under his touch. Warmth spreading through her.
A chorus of 'FINALLY's from their teammates caused the two to break apart.
"Well, maybe you'll finally be able to catch me." Riley smiled as Will pulled her back into an embrace.
He laughed softly. "And Will?" She smiled into his neck. "Yeah?"
