J LBS: The Man and the Music

            Every loaf of sourdough bread has a piece of an older batch baked in it. Somehow this random fact came out when I was interviewing producer J Lbs on the phone. “That’s why when you hear sample records it never sounds like the original record, somebody else has a different vision for it, you know?” said Lbs. His life is filled with the influences of older musical relics that he brings back into existence with his production. For this Grammy nominated producer music is his life.

            J Lbs real name is indeed Jason Pounds and his venture into music all started from one gift from his father. Raymond Pounds is a professional drummer and gave young Jason a drum machine, which was actually given to Raymond by famed musician Stevie Wonder. The drum machine from Stevie then turned into drum and piano lessons all at the age of 9. By 15 he was already creating marketing schemes to get his music out, “Man, before I could put it on CDs I use to record em, as like my voicemail greetings for my cellphone,” said Pounds. He became serious with his early Neptune like scores and entered a beat battle at summer camp that would leave his pride as well as dreams hurt. “Something happened that night, and this dude just clicked,” said Josh, his friend, frequent collaborator and current roommate. After Pounds epic defeat at the hands of a ‘white kid’ at camp his attitude changed. Josh continued, “Above all else, I know Pounds can be a profound producer. If he buckles down and just lives up to his potential, he can do whatever he wants to do.” According to his latest track record he can corroborate that claim.

Work with other budding west coast artists, a Kendrick Lamar track and to top it all off a Grammy nomination has surely proven that Jason has what the people are looking for. A little help from his friends landed him on multiple video shoot sets assisting A Plus Filmz, and for Pounds this were opportunities to network with the artists on set, which paid off handsomely. His production list includes budding R&B songstress JhenéAiko, TDE rapper Jay Rock and work on the highly acclaimed mixtape The Yellow Album from rapper Dom Kennedy. For his work on R Kelly’s album Write Me Back, came the Grammy nomination, as it was nominated for Best R&B Album of 2013. All of this was even before my first encounter of J Lbs at a sold out Kendrick Lamar show when Kendrick began the song “Cartoons & Cereal.” The crowd new every single word and you would have never known from that, that the track never even made his album Good Kid M.a.a.d. City. For J Lbs music is his life, but for Jason Pounds, it has yet to become his livelihood.

            Jason Pounds and J Lbs have their different times throughout the day, which limits his time as both of them. Jason’s day begins at the, oh so early 6:30am, then off to work by 7am. During the day he is known as a teacher’s assistant at Vista Del Mar, and even though his nights as J Lbs may end as late as 3am he still makes it through the day. “Even if I was tired, there’s never a moment of rest”, said Pounds. Financial stability came into play as his music cannot yet pay all the bills. His days are filled with children’s pressing problems, while his nights are for creating. In due time he will be working as producer J Lbs all the time, but even beyond his constrained creative time, his musical career has been marred with setbacks.

            “Ha! Nothing changed after the Grammy nomination,” said Pounds, when I asked him about the impact it has had on his career. Even this year when Kendrick Lamar’s “Cartoons & Cereal” leaked onto the Internet it read across blogs as ‘Produced by THC,’ but was later corrected by Kendrick himself. Nonetheless one would not be able to tell that he is the slightest bit jarred as the 26 year old J Lbs seems to be a continuous stream of positivity. When discussing with me his defining moment in his career he explained to me, “Aw it’s yet to come. It’s just been a lot of great experiences, a lot of great knowledge that I pick up in order to do what I’m suppose to be doing.”
