For me the essence of dining has alway been good service, coupled with food that has been made with thought and extreme care.
I often dine out in small groups, which makes it much harder for waiting staff. However, the staff at J Sheekey did a fantastic job, in fact I would go so far as to say that it was some of the best service I have ever received. It was un-invasive, friendly, kind and extremely conscientious.
We were there for my father’s birthday; upon approach I was struck by how closed up and uninviting it looked, with silver reflective glass to keep prying eyes out. The restaurant's decor was understated yet interesting with dark wood, cream coloured low dome ceilings and silver plate everywhere. I felt very comfortable which is incredibly important to me when I visit a high end restaurant.
We had a wonderful waitress, as I mentioned earlier the service really was impeccable.
For starter, I had the potted shrimp to start with wholemeal toast and watercress. It was delicious, with a peppery hint of flavour. The shrimp were succulent and backed by a rich creamy butter with a little lemon juice to cut through giving it a refreshing zing. It might have been a little too rich for a starter but as I was having a much lighter main it didn't matter.

Very rarely do I have the best plate at the table but for my main, I definite won it this time. I had the mixed roasted shellfish for main, which arrived on a beautiful platter complete with sea lettuce and other sea vegetables. There were two scallops in the shell, half a lobster and 4 tiger prawns. The shellfish had been roasted in garlic butter, which was absolutely divine. The scallops were some of the sweetest I have ever tasted, they were bursting with flavour and cooked to absolute perfection. The lobster and prawns equally so, there was some lobster roe on top of the half which I have never had before. It was intensely flavoured, almost like essence of lobster but was a perfect addition to the lobster. The prawns were also cooked perfectly and overall I would say that this main dish ticked all the boxes.
The other members of the table were jealous of my fruit de mer but also incredibly satisfied with what they had. My brother had Grilled Monkfish & Prawn Brochettewith spiced aubergine and harissa. My mother, the monkfish cheeks (which tasted amazingly like meat balls, incredible dish.) My father had good old fish and chips, which was beautifully unfussy and had perfect batter incasing the fresh fish. And my boyfriend had the Cornish Gurnard on a bed of lentils and chorizo, which was incredibly fresh and combined perfectly with the lentils and chorizo, he was a little disappointed by the size of the portion but with all the sharing that went on, no one was left hungry.
We were a little rushed for time, as we had to get to the theatre but yet again this was no problem for the waitress. She suggested desserts, which would be quick to come, and so we chose accordingly. I had a delectable chocolate cheesecake, which had a beautiful texture, almost like thick chocolate cake on a light biscuit base, complete with succulent raspberries. It was at this point in the meal that the restaurant and it’s staff completely exceled themselves. The maître d’ came to our table and presented my father with a beautiful plate of dusted chocolate truffles. There had been no prompt from my mother and just showed to me how attentive they had been, to know that it was his birthday and do something out of the ordinary, completely unprompted really rounded off what had been a truly wonderful occasion. I would highly recommend it.
