J.F. Williumsen (Sept. 7, 1863 - 1958) was one of the great Danish Modernist (or Modern Break-through) artists, proficient as a painter, sculptor, architect and photographer.

He never graduated from the Royal Danish Academy (despite three attempts) and didn’t like studying with P.S. Krøyer or Laurits Tuxen, either. He was a co-founder of the alternative art exhibit, Den Frie, and designer their gallery building.

Most of his life was spent in France, where his influences also come from: Symbolist painting in the 1890s, Expressionism later, and finally a fascination with antiquity.

Here is a late work: Tanagra, 1940. The model is his mistress, dancer Michelle Bourret. Willlumsen based the work on an ancient figurine found at Tanagra in Greece. The canvas is now at Willumsens Museum in Frederikssund, created in 1957 to host his many works...

P.S. Krøyer - J.F. Willumsen, 1898, oil on canvas Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863-1958) was a Danish painter, sculptor and photographer. He demonstrated his own unique and alternative approaches to making art. He created contentious works that often criticised assumptions existing in society and challenged viewers. He was also experimental in his use of colours, often painting with quick strokes and vivid colours. Willumsen spent much of his life living abroad, particularly in France and Italy.
