Week One: Taking Pictures is Hard

Anyone can take decent pictures with their iPhone or point and shoot camera. I didn’t think it would be too difficult to do the same with our Nikon D700 camera we use in our journalism class. But then we started throwing around terms like aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. I was confused.

I didn’t realize there were all these different aspects that go into taking a picture. It really is a craft you specialize in. It takes me quite a while just to set up the camera to it’s basic setting, let alone adjusting for my subject. 

So let’s see what I did sort of learn.

Aperture is essentially how much light you decide goes into your camera. Measure in f/stops, the bigger the hole the more light you let in, and the smaller the less. 

ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to light. The lower the ISO the less sensitive and the higher the ISO the more sensitive. You want your subject to be properly exposed to the light source. 

Lastly shutter speed is the amount of time the a camera’s shutter is open allowing light to pass through the lens. 

All of these aspects make up the delicate triangle of photography!

Hopefully with more practice I can get the hang of all this...

Mizzou’s DSA offers free meals to students for invaluable experience

The Mizzou Student Veterans Association took the time to give back to the community on Wednesday.

The organization hosted Operation: Free Lunch, a barbecue on Lowry Mall that ran from 11-2 p.m. Students with valid student IDs were given a hot dog or veggie burger, chips and a drink.

This is the website my Fundamentals of Journalism group created for our final project. Our topic was Venture Out, which is an organization at Mizzou that does climbing and team-building programs for other organizations and groups.

This brilliantly designed interactive page (click the title) brings you the story behind its musical elements, and allows you to manipulate them to your pleasure. It seamlessly integrates its ulterior motive, the product, without being annoying at all — in fact, I went ahead and shared it via Facebook, as have roughly 2,000 others.

I'd like to add that its interactivity is key here. Everything demands our attention online now, and a story can only hold viewers for so long; videos in particular are something many would prefer to skip. A ten minute video is an easy 'nope' factor, too much time investment unless the viewer is truly interested, but an interactive piece? Hours could be spent without regret.

Diving Into Multimedia

When I was a freshman looking through the journalism prerequisites I didn't give the classes a second thought, mainly because I knew I wasn't getting out of them. Now it's just this last class before I begin in my emphasis area, and I have no idea what multimedia is. Almost everything Mr. Shane Epping said these first two classes went over my head.

The first week of class did outline what multimedia is for me, but when I was looking for a multimedia piece to tweet about, I couldn't decide what made something a multimedia piece. When we talked in class about doing the numerous projects we have this semester, Mr. Epping said that each element adds a different angle on a story, these elements being audio, video and still photos. So when I was looking for a story to tweet about I tried to meet those elements, but it seemed like I was getting either all video or just still photos.

Then I remembered one of the videos we watched in lab. I can't remember specifically who in the video I'm thinking of or what they actually said, but I believe the gist of what they were saying is that multimedia is still new and developing and that it's not definable yet. It's kind of weird studying something that is so new and still developing, but that's journalism, right? At least I can say I will definitely be learning something this semester.
