WVU Alert System

On Saturday evening, every West Virginia University student received a text message or e-mail saying there was a suspected armed robbery, and suspects fled to North High St. This is scary for any student living on the downtown campus. The North High St. area strictly is filled with student housing like dorms and fraternity houses. 

This is not new for WVU students these types of alerts happen all the time on the downtown campus. Yet WVU loves to advertise our campus as one of the most safe in the country. I am not here to bash on law enforcement but it may seem as they pad the numbers on violent crimes that happen on our campus. 

I personally, have never had a problem on campus. I Djay at the clubs downtown, and sometimes when I don’t want to pay for an uber (because thats half the money I made that night) i’ll walk up the hill to the Pike house. This alert message hit home for me because I could have been in that exact spot coming home from the bar with thousands of dollars worth of equipment including my laptop and turntables. 

I will definitely thing twice about walking home on a Saturday night by myself after seeing this latest text update. WVU does a lot with having volunteer UPD line the streets after dark on the weekends, but it doesn't change the fact that this happens all the time. I am just hoping that I never come within the cross hairs of an armed robbery or shooting on High St.

Morgantown Music

Bigger artists are being attracted to the small college city of Morgantown.

Recently, rapper Ty Dolla $ign performed at MainStage Morgantown in front of a rambunctious crowd of college students. With such a big name coming to perform at the smaller venue one has to wonder.

Is Ty Dolla $ign just washed up? Or is Morgantown gradually growing bigger on the map of places for artists to tour?

I would hope for the latter to be true rather than the former, and there are previous performances by other artists that help to solidify that claim. 

Recently, rapping trio Migos performed at the Coliseum. Migos is one of the hottest music groups currently and have a massive fan following. 

Also, rapper ‘Lil Skies’ came on a tour through Morgantown just last week. He isn’t as prominent on the popularity scale as Migos, but he has over 1 million Instagram followers, and in that day and age that counts for way more than it should.

Other artists like Cage the Elephant, 2 Savage, Brad Paisley, Mac Miller, and Lil Wayne have all performed in this city of only around 60,000 (with the college students in town.) And there are plenty more artists to come.

Is Morgantown slowly becoming more relevant in the music world? I guess that we’ll have to wait and find out.

Have No Fear, Your Resident Assistant Is Here

The one thing most freshman look forward to once they get to college is the freedom. They have the freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want and they don't have to worry about their parents telling them otherwise. 

Too much freedom can seem a little scary though. You have to motivate yourself to wake up and go to class everyday, get all of your homework done before going out with friends, and go to bed at a decent time so you aren’t exhausted the next day. What happens when a phone call to your parent is not enough? 

Luckily, there’s a good solution: Resident Assistants! 

Resident Assistants at West Virginia University are there to help you with whatever you need for freshman. 

Unsure of where a certain class is? Ask an RA.

Having issues with your roommate that can’t seem to be resolved? Go talk to your RA.

RA’s are meant to make your first year at college a little easier in any way possible. They have a chance to make a lasting impression in students’ lives.

During my freshman year, I had two RA’s on my floor. I really do believe that they made my year easier.

We could go to them for anything, and it helped that they were really easy to talk to. We would have floor meetings every months that informed us of events going on around campus and in the dorms. They wanted to make sure that we were always on top of the game and well aware of everything WVU had to offer.

I think that RA’s are essential for freshman. Not only are they there as a resource to freshman, but they can also become your friend.

Art in Morgantown

Bustling with students and townies alike, Morgantown is located along the banks of the Monongahela River in North-Central West Virginia and is home to West Virginia University. 

Morgantown offers a wide array of opportunities for students, as well as people seeking professional jobs and places to settle down. Not only does the university bring an amazing energy to the town and it’s residents, but it brings an art museum, arboretum, botanical gardens, and many creative minds willing to put forth effort and show their talents to further the community, as well as themselves.  

In this blog I will explore local artists and their many different mediums. Morgantown has a lot to offer artistically, as there are three music venues downtown. Besides music, there are many places that creative minds can go to paint, draw, sculpt, blow and stain glass, etc. 

Aside from students and local artists creating for themselves and the community, the university often asks students to help paint murals and such to beautify the school and showcase student talent.

I am excited to seek out and speak with the artists of this wonderful West Virginia town. Big talent often comes from small places.

Will “Fortnite” take over the world?

     If you haven’t heard of “Fortnite” by now then you must be living under a rock. Whether it is affecting a relationship you’re in or you’re addicted to it yourself, it has taken the world by storm

     The cartoonish third-person shooter released to gaming consoles and PCs in late July of 2017 and since then has gained massive popularity, primarily due to its easy accessibility. The game is free.

     This game has done more than please the avid gamer though, it has taken social media by storm with various memes and viral videos surfacing across different platforms. Youtubers dedicate their entire channels to solely playing “Fortnite” and “Fortnite” Instagram fan accounts are created.

     Personally, I wasn’t aware of the game until early December when my friends introduced it to me. Since then, I have replaced a lot of the time dedicated to various daily tasks with time spent playing this game, and many others can say the same.

The Trump Administration

Similar to the rest of the country, the Trump Administration has received mixed messages from WVU students.

Many organizations on campus have expressed problems they have with the current administration, and have taken to the streets to show it. The WVU Young Democrats club organized a “Stand Up to Trump” rally in front of the Mountainlair in September, and continue to show their aversion to the actions the administration is taking in public, as well as online. On November 10th 2016, the day Trump was elected, they tweeted out what would be a vague tweet without context. But given the significance of that date, the tweet further shows their disdain for Trump’s administration. 

“No matter who runs the country, we still have a voice.  As a party we will still fight for what is right.  We are still in this together.” @WVUYoungDemocrats

On the other hand, many organizations have also shown their support for Trump. A club named WVU Students for Trump was created following his election, pretty much the most outright display of support possible. The WVU Republicans club not only attends events in support of Trump and the republican party, but their tweets endorse our president as well. One of their tweets even tags the president himself, and praises him for his work.

“President @realDonaldTrump has delivered a game-changer for West Virginia with the China Energy deal. On the campaign, he pledged to fight for the people of West Virginia. Promise made, promise kept.” @WVURepublicans 

No matter the organization’s stance on the Trump administration, he's surely a hot topic all around campus. I expect this trend will continue for the rest of his term.

“Glow What You Know” event takes on WVU Up All Night

West Virginia University’s Up All Night, a campus program which provides students a heathy and safe alternative to the clubbing scene in Morgantown, is hosting an event called “Glow What You Know” this weekend. This event is presented by both WVU and New Renewable Energy, and is set to take place both Friday and Saturday from 9:00pm to 10:00pm. Events this weekend feature a glow in the dark dance party, corn hole, and dancing with the mountaineer stars. Which are all centered around spreading awareness around the need for new, clean, and renewable sources of energy for the entire world. 

This is one of the more important events put on by UP All Night, as compared to some events which are just created with enjoyment of the user in mind. These events, though still fun, provide a deeper message under all of the games, dancing, and competition. Hopefully, the school puts on more events like this, so students can actively participate and learn about national and global issues that are taking place everyday. Issues like power shortages, that have plagued people in southern West Virginia in the past, and most recently, during the flooding. “Glow What You Know” will also feature a ‘Cards of Hope’ section during the first night of the event. 

Which will feature cards which students can either sign, or write out themselves, and those cards will be sent to people in Puerto Rico effected by Hurricane Irma last August. Along with this, snacks will be provided free of charge for all guests attending. WVU should look into scheduling more events like this in the coming future, but center it around different types of issues. Maybe events on student and police relations, or charitable events centered around helping struggling Veterans. But it is a safe bet, to say that this weekend’s “Glow What You Know” event might be a foreshadowing of what is yet to come.

Want to be a DJ?

Everyone likes to listen to music on the radio while they are driving or riding in a car or just while sitting doing simple tasks. 

U92-FM WVU's campus radio station is accepting volunteer applications until March 15th. Joining the station would look great on a resume. 

The radio station is located in West Virginia University’s Mountainlair. 

U92-FM always seems like a lot of fun. Everyone I have talked to loves woking there and loves the people they meet while working there.

 Also working there gets your foot in the door for the real world as in jobs or just networking and meeting people who can help you later down the road. 

They radio station isn't all just music either there are podcasts on all different types of things such as sports or the community feedback podcast. 

There is also news and of course DJ. 

Many different aspects go into making the radio station a success. There are many different subjects they cover so having people who know what the are talking about is a must!
