On the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, the transaction between fishermen and female customers is rarely a financial one. “Jaboya” or “sex for fish” is a long-entrenched practice that involves women market sellers selling their bodies in exchange for fish. “I’m forced to pay for the fish with sex because I have no other means. I could get diseases but I have no other choice: I have to send my children to school. Jaboya is an evil practice,” says 35-year-old Lucy Odhiambo. Vired, a local charity in Kenya, has launched an initiative to stall the practice and empower the women by giving them ownership of the means of production, boats.
