The World Is Amazing, Actually

I’ve been seeing an alarming increase in “the world is awful and everything in it needs to burn” posts. I know why, I really do (hell, I’ve been saying it myself from time to time). But here’s the thing: no, it isn’t, but the more we say it the more we believe it, and the unhappier (and unhealthier) we are.

So. New thing I’m going to do for awhile, because I have a folder on my computer that is devoted to hoarding pictures and stories about the wild places, beautiful buildings, ridiculous animals, and wonderful people that I’ve stumbled on. Look at this shit! Look at it! It’s gorgeous! It’s weird! It’s REAL!

Caño Cristales is a famous river in Colombia known as the “river of five colors”, which is also considered by many to be “the most beautiful river in the world”. The river has also been called the “liquid rainbow”.

Jabuticaba Tree, a tree where the fruit grows straight off the trunk rather than from the branches, because nothing says “fashion” like wrapping yourself in a cloak of shiny fruit.

Weirdest Tree Ever? Jabuticaba Grows Fruit Right on its Trunk

Jabuticaba is native to the Minas Gerais and São Paulo states of southeastern Brazil, and starts off looking ordinary enough, save for the salmon-covered leaves it sprouts while it’s still young. As it matures to fruiting age, the first sign of something unusual are the starry white blooms that appear not on its branches, as you’d expect, but on its trunk.

Entertainment 3: Glee Glee. It's what you could call the most diverse show to ever air in the history of television. It tackles issues from not getting into your favorite college all the way to sexual curiosity, and it's true that you could learn about that in educational websites or the news but when you learn about it in Glee? There's so much more. There's singing, dancing, and even teenage drama! Isn't that just the best way to learn about the ways of life? Glee was a great show... for the first three seasons. Glee lost its magic after the originals graduated and they added the newbies in. Once they did, Glee was full of recycled storylines using different people for each of them. Glee's only plot for their main couples was everyone cheating on each other and then forgiving one another. And in my opinion, those kinds of relationships aren't healthy at all. What flabbergasted me the most was when Blaine cheated on Kurt! That was just so out of character, I can barely explain my anger towards that moment through words. After season three, Glee just lost all its sense. What kind of person would lock two people inside an elevator just so they would be a couple again? What kind of person would go through great measures to ruin someone's whole life? What kind of adult's sworn enemies are high school students? Apparently Sue Sylvester. Putting aside the fact that she was ultimately crazy, she actually made sense at some points of the show. She would be the one to point out their flaws, point out how crazy it was that the glee club had no budget but had money to use fireworks for a rehearsals. Despite the fact that Glee was generally a show of nonsense, it was a show that helped many people accept who they truly were. Glee made people all around the world realize that it's okay to be different, it doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, bisexual, transgendered or dinosaur, you are who you are and you can't change yourself. Every character had their own share of differences but in the end, they all learned to accept each other. And I think that's a very important concept that many people in the world tend to forget, just because someone is quiet, that doesn't mean they don't have an opinion, a voice. The way that Glee showed that it's alright to be distinctive from the crowd, really opened my eyes. Glee taught me to accept other people for being who they are and taught me to be who I am. Glee, a show of diversity and a show of nonsense. It had a good run and made people all around the world, including myself, realize that being different isn't bad. 8/7/15 Jabuticaba Tree

Entertainment 2: Friends

When someone asks me if I have friends, I reply with “Yeah! Of course I do. I have all 10 seasons of them!” And they just look at me with a blank expression on their faces as if saying “Why am I talking to you?” I respond to that with a smile on my face because if you don’t have all ten seasons of Friends, you probably live under a rock. (A lot of my friends don’t have the ten seasons of Friends so they probably live under a rock as well).

You might be wondering why I’m writing about a show that ended eleven years ago when I could write about actual issues like climate change or AIDS. In response to that, I’m just gonna say that Friends is one of the most entertaining shows to ever air on television. Is it better than all the sitcoms released in the history of television ever? That’s subjective. But is it enjoyable? Absolutely, anyone who disagrees has no sense of humor and probably lives a miserable life.

This show revolves around six main characters, Phoebe, Joey, Monica, Ross, Rachel, and Chandler. You could say that they’re the typical group of friends you’d find anywhere, there’s the smart one, the jokester, the glue of the group, the not-so-smart one, the spoiled one, and the cute, quirky one. You’d probably think that they’re just regular people while watching the first few episodes of this well-renowned TV show, but once you go on, you just find yourself realizing that this is not your typical group of friends that you’d find in the street.

Your typical group of friends don’t obsess over an ugly naked guy living across your apartment, your typical group of friends wouldn’t bet their apartment to get rid of a chick and a duck, your typical group of friends don’t have on and off relationships with each other. That’s what made this show so unique, the fact that it was so out of the ordinary but was so good at making it seem ordinary.

Let me explain further on that by telling you a little story. When I was younger, around 7 or 8, I remember watching Friends for the first time. I barely got any of the jokes but thankfully younger me was smart enough to continue watching the show. Friends just made me laugh before and I thought it was totally normal the things they would do, but it wasn’t until a few months ago that I realized how unusual these group of friends actually were.

What kind of people babysit a baby, bring it with them to a bus and don’t even notice that they left it there once they reach their stop? According to this TV show, those kinds of people exist. And in my opinion, if those types of people exist they should probably be sent to jail or rehab or just NOT be trusted with babies, ever. What kind of people own a chick and a duck in an apartment where the rule clearly says that there are no pets are allowed in the building. I could go on and on with what’s wrong with them but that would probably require me to go over the word limit so I’m deciding against that.

Yes, the way I’m talking about this show, it makes it seem like that it’s a terrible one. But trust me, this TV show is so enjoyable that it’s impossible not to smile while watching an episode. It’s no lie that this show has its plot holes and downfalls but it’s also no lie that this show never fails to put me in a better mood. This show is one of a kind and I guarantee you that this show makes you feel like you have friends even when you think that you have none.
