Victorian anti-hate taskforce to hear from the LGBTQ+ community

Victorian anti-hate taskforce to hear from the LGBTQ+ community
Victoria’s anti-hate taskforce will hear from members of the LGBTQ+ community amidst a rise in violence and targeted attacks.
In a meeting next month, Victoria’s newly formed anti-hate taskforce will hear from LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups and peak bodies.
Victoria’s commissioner for LGBTIQA+ communities, Joe Ball, as well as group members, will speak on behalf of victims of targeted LGBTQIA+ assaults.
“We are backing LGBTIQA+ communities with the care, compassion and dignity they deserve,” Premier Jacinta Allan told The Age, “and holding perpetrators to account.”
The anti-hate taskforce’s members include the Premier, Police Minister Anthony Carbines and Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece.
Just one part of our action plan
Premier Allan announced the anti-hate task force’s formation in July.
Following a rise in anti-semitic attacks and a fire at a synagogue.
“Hate doesn’t belong in Victoria.” Premier Allan said in a statement.
Announcing the taskforce would “look at the bigger picture across our city and state.”
The taskforce was just one part of a broader action plan to tackle such issues.
The first meeting of the taskforce focused on antisemitism in consultation with the Jewish community.
At the same time the taskforce was announced, homophobic graffiti with neo nazi symbolism was painted on LGBTQ+ businesses.
A week earlier, a community forum was held highlighting the rise in targeted attacks, blackmail and violence in the past year against men who have sex with men through dating apps.
Members of the LGBTQ+ communities spoke out, asking where the Victorian Government’s outrage and support were when we needed it.
In September, the LGBTQ+ communities will have the chance to share our stories and consult with Victoria’s anti-hate taskforce, in the hope of combating a rise in targeted violence.
“We’re working closely with community organisations to build a safer, more inclusive Victoria,” Minister for Equality Vicki Ward said, “where everyone is free to be themselves.”

Dedicated helpline established
Counselling service Switchboard Victoria has established a dedicated helpline to provide confidential support and information to LGBTQ+ people who have experienced targeted violence on dating apps.
CEO of Switchboard Victoria Jenna Tuke said the organisation “aims to be responsive to emerging issues for LGBTQIA+ Victorians.”
“The impacts of the recent spate of hate crimes facilitated through meet-up and dating apps have reverberated through the LGBTQIA+ community.”
“It is vital that victim-survivors are able to access confidential support, referral and information about their rights.
“Switchboard will be providing a safe and confidential place for people to access support and information about their rights and options.”
The service will offer trauma-informed support, referral and information in a safe and affirming environment.
Callers can expect to be believed, supported, and provided with information about their rights and options.
This includes accessing legal help, counselling, and police reporting pathways.
“Everyone in Victoria is free to be who they are and love who they want.” Premier Allan said.
“This new helpline sends a clear message to LGBTIQA+ communities – you are not alone.”
The free, confidential service is available via Switchboard’s Rainbow Door helpline.
It operates 5 days a week, from 10 am to 5 pm, from Tuesdays to Saturdays.
You can access the helpline by calling 1800 729 367 and pressing the number 1.

'Disgraceful reporting' Victorian Premier calls out The Australian

'Disgraceful reporting' Victorian Premier calls out The Australian
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has called out reporting in The Australian and the publication’s ongoing transphobic campaign.
At a press conference on Thursday morning, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan was asked about the Victorian Government’s Respectful Relationships program.
The program supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours.
Embedding a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community.
The program was launched in 2016 and was expanded to more nongovernmental schools earlier this year.
The reason why the Premier was questioned about the program was that The Australian published an editorial titled “School-to-clinic pipeline wrong”.
Less than a two-minute read, the editorial said that Respectful Relationships teaches “children struggling with adolescence are persuaded they were born in the wrong body.”
And that “it has the potential to send children down a path towards irreversible and often harmful medical treatment.”
The Respectful Relationships website says it “teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.”
And when Premier Allan was asked about the narrative from the editorial, she was not having a bar of it when asked.
“I believe you’re referring to some reports in The Australian that go to the hugely important Respectful Relationships program,”
“That we support across our schools.” Premier Allan said.
Premier Allan highlighted that the expansion to the Respectful Relationships program came about because of “ongoing perpetration of violence against women.”
As well as “in response to the ongoing rise in the number of kids who were bullied.
“The bullying of kids causes such harm to those kids and keeps parents awake at night.”

The ongoing campaign is disgraceful nonsense
“I have seen first-hand how important the Respectful Relationships program is because it’s in my kids’ school.” Premier Allan said.
“The curriculum is all about protecting kids.”
“Strengthening the resilience of kids.
“And supporting kids to be who they are across our schools and to help other kids understand why respecting difference is so important.”
Premier Allan said that the “ongoing campaign against Respectful Relationships by The Australian does not recognise the transformative difference this program is making every single day in schools.”
When asked by a reporter by a reporter about the parents of trans gender and nonbinary children who feel there is a “school-to-clinic pipeline”, Premier Allan said, “That’s just nonsense. It’s disgraceful nonsense.”
“Seriously, this sort of ongoing attack on a program that is making a difference in kids’ lives should be stopped.” she continued.
“It’s disgraceful reporting.”
“It’s hurtful when you consider that transgender kids are 15 times more likely to kill themselves.
“We should be supporting them.
“We should be supporting them across our schools, across our society, across our community.
“The Australian needs to stop this ongoing campaign because it’s hurtful and harmful.”
In 2019, Equality Australia called out the newspaper’s “disgraceful obsession with humiliating trans people”.
Highlighting headlines in The Australian’s news section, including “They’re castrating children”, “Transgender project ‘out of balance’”, “Sex not a matter of belief”, and “Corrupting kids’ thinking”.
Following a 42-page complaint, the Press Council found The Australian breached fairness and accuracy guidelines in its coverage of transgender issues.
In 2023, the Trans Justice Project and The Victorian Pride Lobby released the Fueling Hate report.
Which documented a sharp rise in widespread and “rapidly escalating” harassment, abuse and violence towards the transgender and gender diverse Australians.

It’s about preventing bullying
A reporter named Carly then asked Premier Allan about The Cass Review in the UK.
Stating it was “one of the most renowned reviews out there and well talked about.”
Premier Allan pointed out that there is a “difference between well-renowned and talked about Carly. But anyway.”
“Perhaps I was not clear enough in my previous answer.” Premier Allan said.
“Transgender kids are 15 times more likely to kill themselves.”
“So, whether it’s across our schooling system or across our health system, supporting those kids and supporting those families should be a priority because it’s the right thing to do.
“What’s not right, not what’s not right, is this ongoing campaign to tear down programs that are about strengthening kids’ resilience.
“It’s about preventing bullying.
“Protecting kids against future harm.”
Premier Allan joined the 30th annual Midsumma Pride March earlier this year.
Delivering a powerful pledge to protect trans and gender-diverse folk from hate and discrimination.
“Even though it’s 2025, we’re seeing efforts not just to wind back the gains of equality that have been made over the past 30 years but worse, to continue to marginalise, continue to inflict hate and hurt on our LGBTIQA+ community,” Allan said.
“I’ll always walk with this community through good times and bad.”
“In Victoria, equality is not negotiable.
“Everyone is free to love who they want to love and be who they are.”

I am a voter who 100% agrees with Jacinta Allan on ABC saying that yep, the lockdowns sucked, but I was not angry at Dan Andrews or the Labor Party for doing it. I was angry that the hotel quarantine failed, but not angry enough to change my vote. It was all measured attempts to control a global disaster. We can't all be so outrageously disconnected from critical thinking that we couldn't see these obvious truths and imagine government is omnipotent. And certainly not provided any sense the alternative party was worthy.
