Tom Patrick werkt bij de NTSB en is van het onderzoeken van vliegtuigongelukken gedegradeerd naar problemen met pijpleidingen, nadat hij bij een openbare gelegenheid zijn grote bek niet had kunnen houden. Als er dicht bij hem in de buurt een vliegtuig tijdens het onderhoud in een hangar uit elkaar klapt, vragen ze hem toch om als eerste man ter plekke de locatie veilig te stellen. Tom doet zijn werkt en denkt er verder niet over na -- hij heeft andere dingen te doen, zoals poker en vrouwen -- tot één van de monteurs contact met hem opneemt omdat hij zeker weet dat het eindrapport over het ongeluk niet klopt en dat zijn verongelukte vriend en collega niet nalatig is geweest. Tom heeft weinig zin om zich ermee te bemoeien, maar als hij de foto's ziet van een vliegtuig dat in Zuid Afrika om onverklaarbare reden uit de lucht is gevallen, begint hij te twijfelen. En die twijfel neemt alleen maar toe als hij merkt dat iedere vordering die hij maakt, leidt tot het plotseling verdwijnen van personen, documenten, en bewijsstukken.

Een raar boek; ondanks het thema wordt het nergens echt spannend. Het is ook niet echt goed geschreven en in elk geval niet erg goed vertaald: Tom lijkt me niet de persoon die dingen niet 'dorst' of doet 'opdat'. De hoofdpersoon is vooral bezig met pokeren en zich afvragen op welke manier zijn grote mond er nou weer voor heeft gezorgd dat een vrouw niet met 'm naar bed wil. Het enige dat Tom nog een beetje sympathiek maakt, is dat hij zelf beseft hoe zijn gebrek aan zelfbeheersing en diplomatie hem in de weg zit. Ik heb me de hele tijd zitten afvragen of de auteur nou een vrouw is die extra haar best doet om een boek voor mannen te schrijven, of een man die er zo nu en dan verwijzingen naar over het algemeen meer met vrouwen geassocieerde cultuur bij haalt, om het potentiële publiek voor het boek te vergroten.

Tom wist dat hij het had verkloot. Zijn brein was een wetenschappelijk wonder, maar zijn mond behoorde toe aan een voorspelbare puber die slechts met seks, drugs en rock-'n-roll een weekend alleen was gelaten in het ouderlijk huis. Tom vroeg zich, overigens niet voor het eerst, af wanneer -- en óf -- hij zijn grote mond ooit geheel onder controle zou krijgen. En als dat het geval was, kon hij er dan beter niet gewoon nu uit stappen? Waarom zou hij tot zijn oksels in giftig slijk hangen, wachtend tot de ene vernedering plaatsmaakte voor de volgende? Hij keek naar het dossier dat de tegen-die-tijd-iets-minder-vijandige-actrice-schuine-streep-receptioniste voor hem had gekopieerd. Een golf van zelfhaat spoelde over hem heen. Hij wist waarom hij Halo Jackson hielp. De jonge weduwe en de dochter van Chris Stern hadden misschien wel voor een impuls gezorgd, maar hij móést uitzoeken wat er met de Pride of Maine was gebeurd omdat hij móést laten zien dat hij het werk waarvan hij hield nog steeds kon doen; ook al was het dan na het incident en onofficieel en maakte het geen ene moer uit. Hij besefte dat hij zich aan dit dunnen draadje van zijn oude leventje vastklampte. Als dat knapte, was hij verloren, losgeslagen op een zee van mislukkingen en lekkende pijpen, dode vissen en vervuiling. En zo werpen de golven van zelfhaat mij op de kusten van zelfmedelijden, dacht hij spottend en hij grijnsde. Wat een fokking loser ben je toch.

When I did my first major performance art piece at the Cleveland Performance Art Festival on April 9, 1993, I handed out a flyer with the performance of Jack's Theorem and the Primal Thought. On this flyer I wrote "The Act is TRUTH. Nothing that was ever recorded is truth. Nothing that was ever said is truth. Only the ACT." This is the best definition that I am aware of for performance art. However, I can list some attributes of Performance Art that are unique to the medium. 1. A performance art piece is unprecedented. 2. It is difficult to censor since it has a good possibility of never being done before. 3. It is usually very current. This means that it is usually relevant of today because of the short time between conception and performance. 4. Performance art can involve the audience with taste, smell and sounds not available with electronic media and not practical with conventional theater. This is due to the usually small audience. 5. Performance art is the ultimate in creativity. Since it has so many possibilities at creativity, it's essence tends to become creativity. 6. Occupies an environment with specific objects and actions for a specific amount of time. 7. The space time restraints of performance art does not allow for elaborate sets/props and cost very little to produce. 8. Performance art can be produced in a coffee house setting. 9. Since the audience is usually small (around 30) the performers can actually give things to the audience, such as food or money. 10. Performance Art is brief, about 15 minutes long. This is a problem in that you cannot get people to come out to watch a 15 minute performance. Therefore, Performance Art Festivals are appropriate in contrast to an individual performance.
