A short fix-it fic for Yeoman of the Guard because Elsie and Jack Point deserve it.
Me: "I have a song to sing, o!"
Point: "what is your song, o!"
Me: *proceeds to very much not sing the right words or tune variation*
Point: *sings verse 1 again instead of verse 3 which is longer so there was loads of empty music*
Us: *standing there smiling at each other and being cute waiting for verse 4 so we can get back on track*
The MD in the interval: "on my grave stone will be written 'cause of death- improvised 'merryman and his maid' duet'"
Jack Point should've been King Gama's court jester. In this essay I will....
How do you think Papageno and Jack Point would get along?
Ooh, interesting question
First of all post-canon Jack meeting post-canon Papageno & Papagena would be painful for Jack. And tbh while Papageno might be genuinely sympathetic to his plight I don't think he would have the tact not to go on and on about how happy he is with Papagena and give well-intentioned but non-appliable relationship advice.Which Jack would probably take as Papageno purposefully as rubbing it in (not at all what it was intended at) and snap at him. Not that I think Papageno would be that terribly upset by it, more of "whatever, if you're going to be like that I'm leaving"┐( ∵ )┌
Second of all I think they're a case of country mouse (or rather, forest mouse) vs city mouse. Papageno knows very little of the human society on which Jack's entire livelihood depends. Jack knows nothing of the woods (aside from maybe "that place where I'll be sleeping if I don't make it to the next town by sunset"). I don't think Papageno would get most of Jack's jokes. He tries to offer some funny bird anecdotes in return but gets a blank stare. Rough start. Also Papageno has a strong sense of belonging and contentment re: his job which Jack Point very much lacks. If Jack with his strolling player past ever had a strong notion of home it was tied to Elsie, not a place, and now that's gone too. So Papageno's deep love of the woods would be alien to him. Still, after a while i think Jack would see the beauty. And there are no audiences and masters to please which normally would be worrying (no audience=no money) but in his present state of mind is something of a relief really. And Papageno is curious and might be interested in hearing stories of all the towns Jack visited (market research to sell his birds 😝).
I also think that they could bond over bad bosses and enjoy making fun of Sarastro's priests together (from a safe distance of course). Jack would surely find plenty to mock in the local dignified clergy. They also firmly agree on staying out of danger as much as possible. That could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
