1) Jaime/Brienne, A Song of Ice and Fire

Duh.

Of course. What else would it be? Jaime and Brienne are captivating, subversive, and just different from anything else I have ever read. I don't believe in soulmates, but these two are soulmates and bring out the best in each other. Jaime reforms himself not for Brienne, but because of her example, and then in Winds of Winter, Jaime is going to help Brienne realise she is lovable because after the whole Lady Stoneheart thing goes down he is going to be all THIS IS MY WIFE. *I’m totally not crying at the thought*. How the Show That Shall Not Be Named ended their relationship conjured an unholy rage within me that propelled me into the world of fanfiction, so most of the time I choose to believe that Jaime and Brienne are still on that romantic weekend in the Riverlands they have been on since 2011 when I finished Dance with Dragons.

2) Jack/Aliena, Pillars of the Earth

This was the first "grown-up book" I read when I was about 13 and, even though I know it is not the height of literature, I re-read it at least once a year because I just love it so much. Jack meets Aliena when he is 12 and she is 17 and just pines and pines and pines. In contrast, Aliena has lots of STUFF going on in her own life so ignores the 12 year old. Years pass. Jack learns how to build cathedrals. Aliena's life turns upside down after her former fiancé brutally rapes her and then she has to stop outlaws killing off her whinging younger brother. After that, she makes the sensible decision by swearing off horrible men. In the process, she builds up a wool business so she will never have to be dependent on bloody men again and generally becomes a badass. However, because she is now the richest woman in twelfth-century England, every man this side of France wants to marry her. Still totally traumatised by her past, she rebuffs them all. Enter Jack. Now no longer 12, he slowly wins her over by treating her like an equal, discussing their mutual interest in medieval storytelling, and taking an active interest in her business. It is an extended friends to lovers slowburn set in medieval England and I love it. The miniseries staring pre-fame Eddie Redmayne and Hayley Atwell is also pretty cool. Here ends my ted talk.

3) Antonio/Pelagia, Captain Corelli's Mandolin

I know I never stop banging on about this book, but I love it. Pelagia lives on the island of Cephalonia in Greece during WW2. Greece is invaded by the Italians and an Italian captain by the name of Antonio Corelli is stationed in her house, which she lives in with her father. Pelagia is determined to hate Antonio because he is THE ENEMY, but then she accidentally finds herself stuck in an Enemy to Friends to Lovers slowburn fic built entirely on sexual tension. Antonio and Pelagia bond over mutual snarkiness, a love of classical music, and generally being cleverer than everyone around them. If you like Jaime/Brienne, you will be into Antonio/Pelagia too. It has a kinda bittersweet ending, but it is just such a good read anyway. In contrast, the author of this book described the film version with Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz as being like his baby with his ears stuck on back to front, so don’t watch that.

I know we shouldn’t discuss (n)sf-tumblr stuff but fuck it I want to just say that the love scene in Pillars of the Earth between Jack and Aliena is really beautifully done. I mean I’m totally biased anyway because, you know, Eddie Redmayne, but it genuinely is really well done.

There’s not an overt focus on the nudity or being titillating, it’s very romantic and has soft music over it. What gets me though is that at this point, this is the first and so far only consensual experience with s3x Aliena has had - she was r*ped by William Hamleigh, and there’s also the creepy scene where Alfred spies on her whilst she’s naked and bathing (she knows he was watching by the way, and I love that she nearly drowned him when he forced a kiss on her). There’s also that overhanging thing of the fact she’s reluctantly agreed to marry Alfred so that she can pay for her brother to continue his knighting stuff. I don’t know, I just think there’s something very beautiful about the scene between her and Jack.

Also I’m not about to turn down the chance to see Eddie Redmayne without clothes so- 🤷🏻🙈
