#classicmovienight been a while since I watched a classic movie so tonight I’m watching the 1954 classic musical remake of “A Star is Born” starring Judy Garland, James Mason, Charles Bickford & Jack Carson 😊
This was Judy Garland’s huge comeback to the screen after leaving MGM in 1950 after the success of Summer Stock before this she was well known in movies such as Babes in Arms, Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade & of course The Wizard of Oz. After leaving MGM due to personal issues with herself and her studio she went on a concert tour in Europe before making her comeback with the movie I’m watching tonight which was produced by her 2nd husband Sid Luft.
The film at its world premiere was met with loads of critical acclaim and popularity among moviegoers and was originally 3 hours and 2 minutes long but concerns of the movie being too long prompted Warner Bros to cut the film to 2 hours and 34 minutes which angered the director George Cukor because it cut two major musical numbers and some important scenes years later however some old footage was restored in stills which almost brought it back to its original length.
This movie is also infamously known for having one of the biggest losses in Oscar history when Judy Garland was nominated for Best Actress and lost to Grace Kelly in “The Country Girl” everyone was betting on Judy to win this award and she couldn’t make the ceremony because she was having her 3rd child Joey at the time and they had cameras set up in the hospital for when she won so can thank everyone but sadly it didn’t happen and all the cameras left which made Judy really upset. Legendary comedian Groucho Marx of the Marx Brothers called it “The biggest robbery since Brinks”
On a personal note I honestly thought Judy should’ve won not that I don’t like Grace Kelly I think she’s amazing but The Country Girl isn’t one of her best films and Judy rightfully deserved it more than she did but that’s just my 2 cents haha 😊
