You know I wasn’t actually planning to write an essay but I have more to say about this actually:
One of c!Techno’s key character facets is frustration at being reduced to “The Blade” because of his PVP skills, while Phil (both in and out of character tbh) often gets fast-tracked into the role of Responsible Adult because (1) he’s an old man whose survival skills lead people to assume he possesses common sense and some level of self-control, and (2) he’s Philza Minecraft, the creator of Minecraft.
But Technoblade doesn’t need a Responsible Adult to keep him from dying or doing stupid shit. Mans can handle himself. He’s very self-directed, with a plan for what he wants to do and how he’s going to do it. He still invites Phil along for the ride, of course, but it’s as a display of trust and friendship, of collaboration between equals, because (shocker!) these nerds like finding reasons to spend time together, whether it’s to move house, advance the cause of anarchy, or just spend an afternoon corralling some turtles.
Likewise, Phil’s perfectly competent on his own; he doesn’t rely on The Blade to defend him or tip the scales in a fight. On the contrary, he describes himself as Techno’s weapon—his “hidden sword”—and while Techno would fight an army for Phil in a heartbeat, the sentiment is very obviously mutual, and Phil makes it clear that he views Techno’s loyalty not as a strategic resource, but as a gift to be stewarded.
From Techno’s stream “a new home (dream SMP),” [2:48:17]:
Technoblade: If you ever need my help, I will come out of retirement immediately.
Philza: (laughs, then turns serious) I’ll only call on you when I desperately need help.
When the Butcher Army places Phil under house arrest, Techno sneaks into New L’Manberg to stage a dramatic rescue, but I think it’s worth noting that Phil never asks or expects Techno to put himself in danger. What’s more, Phil is already orchestrating his own escape plan over the course of the stream, biding his time and leveraging his knowledge of game mechanics to outwit Tubbo all on his own. Techno rendezvousing with Phil at the edge of New L’Manberg isn’t so much a rescue as it is a reunion, two friends relieved to be at each other’s side once more.
With Phil, Technoblade has space to express warmth, humor, and genuine affection, trusting that those vulnerabilities won’t be leveraged against him. Phil, for his part, gets to be an absolutely chaotic little bastard who doesn’t have to worry about setting a good example or dragging someone else away from the brink of death.
Also, they just?? Have fun when they’re hanging out together??? No looming responsibilities, no expectations, just two dumbasses (affectionate) and their ever-growing menagerie of semi-domesticated animals in the arctic. And Ranboo, sometimes. God bless Ranboo.
In short: c!Emerald Duo my beloved.
(Shoutout to @crepusculum-rattus for enabling my ego encouraging me to actually write proper meta for this; they’re the real MVP of this post.)
