Jackmaster K - Don't Go Lose It [Killax Recordings]

In some ironic trapping of a musical landscape always looking over its shoulder, always rehashing old trends, the most striking thing about Jackmaster K's recently reissued 'Don't Go Lose It' is how fresh and modern it sounds. The twists continue when you do some digging about Jackmaster K and it turns up, not some gnarled picture of a forgotten East Coast trailblazer, but recurrent images of a young producer from Birmingham. This isn't a re-issue at all. The name, the cover, the vibez, a misheard bit of info about the source of the Numbers head-honcho's DJ name, general lazy journalism and an even lazier ear - all these things can get you lost in the labyrinths of retro-fetishism. With no broadband connection, nothing but your eyes and ears, 'Don't Go Lose It' is a true forgotten classic.

Sure it kicks and jacks like much of the recent wave of 4x4 apers, but what really gets you is the cheap kazoo sounds on 'Don't Go Lose It', the unashamedly brash sax lines, the uplifting gospel house chorus complete with church organ - these are elements that recent movements in throwback house have chosen to leave dead and buried. Perhaps they are a bit corny, or maybe they're just too downright fun for today's dour-faced house-hipsters, reminding of an uncomfortable past where you could dress like the kids from Saved By the Bell without semi-irony.

'Such a Good Feeling' continues in a similar vein, with a joyfully uncool jazzy, Kerri Chandleresque breakdown while Raffa FL rounds off the 12" on remix duties. It's a stripped back club-ready restyling with perfect interplay between vocal snippets and melodic keys that remind of the heyday of Marc Kinchen - a classic dub flipside if ever there was one.

If retro-house revival is a big game of anachronistic hide and seek, Jackmaster K's a clear winner. If ignorance like this can enrich musical experience, I hope to God you stopped reading and just listened to the previews. If not, I'm sorry.
