“Man Invades Prison Fires Upon Guard,” Border Cities Star. February 7, 1933. Page 1. ---- JACKSON, Mich., Feb. 7. - Guard Captain Charles T. Retter, of Michigan State Prison, was wounded in the leg by an unknown assailant early today, prison authorities revealed.
The assailant, hiding on the roof of Retter's garage, first attracted the attention of the prison worker by throwing stones. Then he fired five shots at Retter, one of them taking effect in his leg.
Police trailed the man through the snow for 20 blocks, where he was believed to have escaped in a waiting automobile. Officials theorized that the man was a former prisoner who held a grudge against the guard captain.
