What a long strange trip it’s been! 🎼💐 Fare Thee Well !
My Father is an amazing man with decades of community service overcoming racism, prejudice and early child poverty. Though he says "we never felt poor" I know my grandmother said life wasn't always easy. My father also had a strong desire to be supportive of the underdog. And he had desire to overcome opression. But maybe there was a bit of Grateful Dead's "Jack Straw" secretly hidden in him as well? like some of us who like pirates, eh? Found this play bill in a frame on the wall in his home. Pancho Villa?!! Guess there was always a bit of Caballero in Dad too!! Parents live a whole life we children only have glimpses of!! #panchovilla #dad #familyhistory #gratefuldead #jackstraw #caballero #pirates #opression #parents #underdog #children #colorado #newmexico #whole #life #history #glory #gold #forgloryandgold #glimpses (at Longmont, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgK5bN3L-Eg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Song Review: Dead & Company - “Jackstraw” (Live, Sept. 13, 2021)
On Sept. 13, “Jackstraw” kept on rolling like a down-tempo “Lost Sailor.”
Sounding like a 45-rpm set at 33 1/3, Dead & Company betrayed not a hint of irony as they sang: My old buddy you’re movin’ much too slow. The audience singers, meanwhile & unfortunately, failed to drown out John Mayer’s comical falsetto backgrounds.
Singing Jerry Garcia’s parts and playing a pink guitar a la Bob Weir in the 1980s, it’s nevertheless Mayer who saves the thing when he stumbles on to a tasty arpeggio around the nine-minute mark & subsequently gives his bandmates a much-needed kick in the keister.
Yet it’s still an entry in the too-little-too-late column as this performance - just shared on professional video as the band cools its heels between the summer & fall legs of its pandemic-era tour - doesn't generate much of anything; quite the feat with a song that once had the potential to generate everything.
