Reading the Halo novels has had a very unplanned effect on me in that now I really care about what happened to Captain Keyes. Don't get me wrong, what happened to him is horrific no matter how you spin it, even by Flood standards, but... getting snapshots of him throughout his life, getting to know him, seeing him develop as a person and grow into the leader we see in Combat Evolved. Knowing what he meant to Catherine Halsey, to his daughter Miranda, to his crew on the Iroquois. It makes you care about him, and then he suffers one of if not the worst fates in all of fiction, and there's nothing you can do to stop it because this is how it's always ended for him. Every piece of media that's brought back Jacob Keyes has only served to twist the knife a little deeper because he mattered so much to so many people and that list includes me.

Was Chief's last name ever revealed? I know his first name is John and I'm pretty sure his last name hasn't been revealed so here are my headcannons/theories

1. John Johnson, then I remembered Sargent Johnson and suddenly it got deep

2. John Halo, I saw it online

3. 'Vadam, yall know why

4. Keyes, same-ish reason as Johnson

5. Halsey. Because John was Halsey's favorite and stuff
