Sew it Seams

Calliope held the dress in her hands carefully, her eyes examining the tear. She was crushed - it was one of her favorite dresses. She had just finished the morning’s chores when she went in to change to go into town for the day. Everything would have been fine if Mizu hadn’t teased the filly who, once again, decided to kick at the fence. Calliope had to control that horse’s kicking habit quickly. But a broken fence was an easy fix. Unfortunately, it was not so easy on her beloved dress, which tore when it got caught on the jagged edge of the board as she tried to pry it away to replace it.
She only cried a little bit when it happened. She wanted to wear the dress when Anna came to visit over the weekend for her birthday. Calliope wasn’t about to just let it go, however. She was determined to do whatever she could to save the dress. Wasn’t there a tailor in town? She was capable of doing a quick, easy stitch herself, but this would require much more - an expert’s touch. She didn’t like to spend money she didn’t have to, but she just couldn’t see herself throwing out the dress. She loved it too much.
She pulled on her dusty boots and hurried to her truck. The engine started loudly, as it always did, and she tossed the dress onto the seat beside her. Bear wagged his tail on the front porch, barking to her as she pulled to the front of the house. She sighed. “Come on, you,” she said, waving her arm out the window.
The dog loped happily towards her as she stepped out. She dropped the tail gate and Bear jumped in easily, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Calliope closed the tail gate and climbed back into the truck, glancing in the rear view mirror as the dog rested his chin on the edge of the truck.
The truck puttered down the dirt driveway and onto the old, paved road that brought them into town. She stopped only for a moment to ask someone on the side of the road to be pointed in the right direction. When she got to the tailor, she pulled beside the building quickly and jumped out of the truck, taking the dress with her.
“Stay here,” she said to Bear as she walked around the truck. She quickly patted the dog on the head. “I’ll be right back.”
Bear settled against the corner of the bed, waiting for Calliope’s return.
Calliope opened the door and poked her head inside. Her eyes scanned the shop quickly as she stepped in and closed the door behind her, catching sight of the young man behind the counter. She brought the dress over and smiled sheepishly as she placed it carefully on the counter, presenting the tear to him.
“Uh, hi,” she started. “Do you, uh, think you can fix this?”
